Washburn D10 Series D10SCEK Acoustic Electric Cutaway Guitar Review

Washburn D10 Series D10SCEK Acoustic Electric Cutaway Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this Washburn electric acoustic guitar (D10SCEK) for over 2 years and it has been an absolute delight to play on. It was (and still is) in such demand that both Amazon and the Washburn sites were out of stock when I tried to order it. I had to pre-order it direct from the Washburn site, but I had to wait for almost 6 months before it finally shipped!
The Washburn D10SCEK guitar is the acoustic electric version of the best-selling guitar in the world -- the D10S (acoustic guitar).
Features
--------
- Sound Improves with Age
The top of the guitar (i.e. the soundboard) is made from spruce (the most common wood for guitar tops). The sound from a spruce top guitar improves with age.
- Built-in Tuner and Preamp
The D10SCEK can be played like an acoustic guitar and to all intents and purposes it sounds just like its cousin, the D10S. The primary structural difference is the D10SCEK has a cutaway for allowing easy access to the upper frets. There are those that contend that a cutaway degrades the sound, but even if it were true, the sound degradation is totally imperceptible to me!
The other difference is, of course, the D10SCEK has a built-in tuner and preamp. The built-in tuner is very handy! It is easy-to-use, accurate, and makes keeping the guitar in tune a breeze!
Washburn has traditionally used the WT-82 (or occasionally, the WT-92) tuner/preamp but they have reportedly started using the Fishman Isys tuner/preamp as well. The preamp has 5 controls (1) treble, (2) bass, (3) middle, (4) presence, and (5) volume.
There are two output options; you can either use an XLR or a 1/4" connector (so there is no need to use an adapter, such as an XLR Female To 1/4" Male Adapter).
- Quality Build
The build of the guitar is superb. The neck and fretboard on my 2-year-old guitar has maintained its straightness, with no signs of warping. The metal tuning pegs have remained very firm (not jiggly) -- the guitar stays in tune once it's tuned. Everything about the guitar from the construction to the finish is impeccable.
The quality of the wood used is first-rate:
o the top: spruce
o the neck, sides, and back: mahogany
o fingerboard: rosewood
- Quality Hardshell Case Included
A high quality hardshell case (the Washburn GC110) is included. The case is extremely sturdy and the plush interior is padded to keep the guitar well protected. (FYI, a quality hardshell case, such as this Golden Gate Hardshell Case, sells for upwards of 60.)
Alternatives
------------
(1) The D10SCEK is available in all-black as well (D10SCEB).
(2) The D10SCEK also has a "Deluxe" version (D10SCEDLK). The deluxe version is identical to the D10SCEK except for its abalone inlayed rosette, gold tuning pegs, and rosewood sides and back (you pay a premium for the extra niceties).
---
I love my Washburn acoustic electric guitar. Its sound quality and build is exceptional. If you're looking for a quality acoustic electric guitar, this one's definitely worth consideration.

Jackson RR24M Rhoads - Snow White w/ Black Bevels Randy Rhoads Signature Electric Guitar with Case Review

Jackson RR24M Rhoads - Snow White w/ Black Bevels Randy Rhoads Signature Electric Guitar with Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought one of these a couple months ago from a nearby shop. It has a great sound, is fairly lightweight, the neck is thin and the fretboard is nice and smooth. The tremolo is a bit tough to get right, but once in tune it stays in tune. I was extremely surprised at how long my guitar stays in tune, especially with the whammy and bends. Probably helps if the strings are of good quality. Mine came with 4 springs. All around, I think it's worth the price, even though I got a great deal on mine. If you want more features/pickups then you'll have to shell out for the more expensive models; but I like it simple :)
One thing to be aware of is the strap. Get a good one. Depending on the size of the strap , the strap adjustment lock will need to be in a position that is comfortable near the left arm, or high enough so it won't scratch the back of the guitar near the input jack (which is just above the strap hook).
Last but not least, get the Jackson hardshell case (or any other hardshell case that claims to fit this, though the Jackson one is guaranteed to fit). It's worth it. Took me sometime to break down and buy it, but I think it's better to spend more on a good case than having to worry about damaging my guitar.

The Spartan-looking RR24M Randy Rhoads guitar is a 24-fret no-nonsense neck-through-body monster. It delivers the goods in the spirit of its legendary namesake. Pro features include a beveled alder body and rock maple neck-through-body for tight lows, throaty mids, and biting highs. The compound-radius maple fingerboard anchors 24 jumbo frets that combine with the swept back body design for easy access and extreme note bending. Includes a single EMG-81 pickup, a Floyd Rose FRT-O2000 double-locking 2-point tremolo, and black hardware. This Jackson guitar looks hot and sounds hot! Jackson's compound-radius fingerboard curves more dramatically at the nut for easy chording and flattens out as it approaches the neck joint for low-action bends without fretting out. With a more relaxed hand, you'll play better.

TC Electronic G-Natural Floor Based Effects System Specifically for Acoustic Guitar with Microphone Preamp and Vocal Effects
Average Reviews:

The owner's manual is not very good, TC could have done a much better job with it considering the price of the unit and the fact that it is full of switches and knobs. Still, after a short time playing around with the settings I was able to edit the factory presets and save my own, so it wasn't too bad. Some of the 30 factory preset sounds are not very useful, and others I loved and used right out of the box. I feel it has added a beautiful and clear sound. I only wish the tuner was more accurate, it's really useless.
Overall, I love my G-Natural, it has replaced all my existing pedals and simplified my playing setup.

Godin SD 22 Electric Guitar (Amber Flame Leaftop RN) Review

Godin SD 22 Electric Guitar (Amber Flame Leaftop RN)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought the Godin SD 22 but not from Amazon. Bought it from a private owner who bought it new and never used it. I own both an American Telecaster and Les Paul. This guitar is somewhat a combination of both and maybe a little Stratocaster in there too. You will find the wood quality excellent, (Canadian) The guitar has a balanced feel where it is not too heavy like my Les Paul. The frets are flush to the sides when you run your fingers over them. The knobs are knurled metal and have a nice feel. The single humbucker pickup gives some nice tones. The two single coil pickups are OK too but not as good as my telecaster. All in all, a very versatile guitar with excellent quality for the money. I would buy it again.

The SD 22 combines the easy feel of a short scale with the added snap of a rock maple neck. The short scale reduces string tension, which provides easy string bending and augments the low frequency response. The compact feel of the neck and the diagonal radius carved into the body produces exceptional balance and comfort. In short, this guitar is fun to play, and lends itself to classic rock and R&B sounds.

Maple and Poplar Body
The SD 22 is constructed with a blend of two tonewoods. A center of silver leaf maple serves as an anchor for the neck and is flanked by poplar sidepieces, resulting in Godin's stated goal of making electrics that begin with a great acoustic sound. Solid body instruments may not produce much in the way of volume, but make no mistake, wood weight and density, type (and quality) of the neck/body attachment, type of bridge and nut material all have an impact on that final sound.
One Godin GHB1 humbucker and two Godin GS1 single-coil pickups, along with a five-way switch for serious tonal options.

Gibson Les Paul Axcess Standard Electric Guitar, Floyd Rose, Ice Tea Review

Gibson Les Paul Axcess Standard Electric Guitar, Floyd Rose, Ice Tea

(More customer reviews)
When I bought this product at guitar center, i thought i was taking home a quality product. What actually happened was after a week of playing it, the whammy bar fell out and took some parts with it and that was a $100 repair and a month after that the head snapped and that was much more expensive. After that, I sold it on craigslist for a fraction of what i paid for it. Terrible product. Not to mention, it's looks really ugly with the floyd rose

Gibson's Les Paul Axcess Standard Electric Guitar: Improving the StandardFor nearly six decades now, Gibson's Les Paul Standard has stood the test time as the most playable electric guitar in the world. While others have attempted to imitate it, none have come close to duplicating the qualities of this legendary guitar. Yet each year, Gibson attempts to improve on the world's best guitar. This time, it's with the new Les Paul Axcess Standard electric guitar from Gibson Custom.
More than Just Different: Gibson's Les Paul Axcess Standard Electric Guitar The Les Paul Axcess Standard is more than just "different." It's the result of Gibson's drive to build the best Les Paul Standard possible, while staying true to the design and performance of the iconic Les Paul electric guitars of the past. The new Les Paul Axcess Standard from Gibson Custom carries all the elegant styling, fluid body lines and rocking attitude of a classic Les Paul Standard from the golden era of the late 1950s. Upon closer examination, however, the Les Paul Axcess reveals a handful of upgrades--all modifications made in the name of maximum playability and versatility. As Gibson Custom Operations Manager Michael McGuire puts it, "Everything about this Les Paul has been designed to make it a player's 'player's guitar.' From the easy access to its upper range to the comfortable belly scarf to the Floyd Rose vibrato, this instrument was made to give you optimum performance."
Gibson's Les Paul Axcess Standard Features a Distinctive Floyd Rose Vibrato The most noticeable addition to Gibson's Les Paul Axcess Standard electric guitar is the Floyd Rose tailpiece, a unit optimized for anything from subtle vibrato wobbles to dramatic, rumbling divebombs. Adding a Floyd Rose to a Les Paul in the past was always a major undertaking, and one that could seriously damage the stability of the instrument if not done right. On the Les Paul Axcess, the vibrato is installed right at Gibson Custom as part of the manufacturing process, which means this potent piece of high-performance hardware interacts seamlessly with the design of this electric guitar. Partnered with an R4 locking nut, it also guarantees fantastic tuning stability and return-to-pitch accuracy.
Contoured Neck for Upper Fret Access on the Gibson Les Paul Axcess Standard Electric Guitar If you take the Gibson Les Paul Axcess Standard electric guitar and run your fingers up the neck, you'll encounter the clever structural alteration that gives this new model its name: While the Axcess sports what looks from the front to be a traditional Les Paul neck joint, the neck heel and portions of the back and neck joint at the upper cutaway have been contoured to provide a "heelless" feel, and an unimpeded reach right up to the 22nd fret. What does this mean? No more stretching against the traditional neck heel to achieve the upper-fret access that your lead style demands--the Axcess gives you that legendary Les Paul playability all the way up the neck, welcoming you to take it right over the top. Comfortable Ribcage Contour To further enhance playing comfort, this smoothly carved neck joint is combined with a "belly scarf" (aka ribcage contour) that allows the body of the electric guitar to hug closely to your own body in the playing position without digging in. Refreshingly Light Body Style The Les Paul Axcess's slightly thinner body, made from weight-relieved mahogany (with carved maple top), gives you an instrument that is refreshingly light and a pure joy to play, either strapped on or in a seated position. Optimum Tone Setup The Gibson Les Paul Axcess Standard electric guitar is also geared toward optimum tone, as you'd expect from any Gibson Custom creation. Exposed-coil BurstBucker 1 and BurstBucker 2 pickups in the neck and bridge positions--the most accurate reproduction vintage-PAF-style humbuckers Gibson has ever offered--yield everything from warm, fluid vocal tones to fat, sweet growl, while an added push/pull switch on the treble Tone knob provides coil splitting for accurate single-coil tones. These unique tonal combinations excel at delivering everything from singing classic rock lead tones to contemporary crunch to extremes of twang and jangle. Even the pure-nickel wound .10-.46 Gibson Vintage Strings it ships with contribute toward its rich, textured voice. Bogner Alchemist 112 Tube Guitar Amplifier Review

Bogner Alchemist 112 Tube Guitar Amplifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The performance of this amp as far as tone and features
is great. Some classic Bogner tones can be had for
significantly less than buying a USA Bogner.
However, these amps seem to be plagued with Q&A
issues. Just do a Google search.
In my case, it worked fine for about 2 weeks then
one day it made a loud hum while I was playing
and just died. This too, is a documented problem
and not an isolated incident. Even with all these
issues I could live with getting an amp repaired
but after one phone call to Line 6 (who services
these amps) it was obvious that there was no guarantee
that either the problem would be fixed or that it
would be done in a timely manner.
I have no time or patience for this kind of nonsense
after spending $800 on an amp.
So you pays your money and takes your chances.
You might get a great amp, or you might buy yourself
a headache.

Alchemist' spins the visions of discerning guitarists into gold.Boasting sparkling, articulate cleans, touch-sensitive leads and a bright and colorful crunch, the all-tube Alchemist is a modern take on vintage amp design. Its remarkable tonality it owes to a 6L6 class-AB power section, featuring five 12AX7 preamp tubes and a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. Its timeless appeal, though, it owes to classic innovation, modern ingenuity and its namesake, an entrancing ancient mysticism. Alchemist exhibits a two-channel design, each channel with its own voice and identity. Beginning clean and fast, featuring an open top-end and tight bottom-end, Channel 1 opens gradually to present simmering blues tones that churn like spirits in a cauldron. Advancing toward saturation, Crunch mode turns up the heat adding the perfect touch of nastiness with added pick response and increased tonal complexity. Channel 2, achieving critical mass, invokes the famous white-hot Bogner gain-creamy, modern and screaming with sustain-offering everything from Brit rock right through to modern metal. Plus, with variable Bright settings, each channel can be customized to match the tone of your guitar and rig.Featuring a selectable power section, from 40 to 20 watts, the Alchemist sonority quickly transforms to display a very different kind of magic. When switched to 20 watts, Alchemist undergoes a complete sonic metamorphosis, changing its harmonic complexity and feel to conjure the essence of the legendary Brown sound.Reverb and Delay, in variable styles and levels, run in parallel separate from the original signal. The result is a rich, living and breathing, fully realized resonance capable of producing a complete tonal landscape. Alchemist also includes a four-button footswitch and a parallel effects loop.

Dean Razorback V Guitar 25.5 Scale Black-Yellow with Case Review

Dean Razorback V Guitar 25.5 Scale Black-Yellow with Case
Average Reviews:

This is just simply a great guitar. Keep in mind the floyd rose is licensed but I have dive bombed on this guitar repeatedly and it does not go out of tune. The 255 comes with active EMG pickups. Mine is not the 255 version but the one just under it, but I know the EMG's simply scream as a fellow musicians has these pickups and they are brutal.
My Dime V came with a dimebucker but still is a very good pickup.
You may want to have the action set by a Luthier to your preference. I was able to adjust mine with some ease but I have playing quite a while. Also, do you homeowork on floyd's before you change the strings or you could be hurtin'. The bridge must be blocked before removing the strings or you will throw the whole set up off. Also, floyd's require the balls on the string to be cut before being placed into the bridge. This is not about this particular guitar, floyd's are great tremolos but you must have some basic knowledge of how they work.

The Razorback V 255 is the next generation in the Razorback Series, built on that same shape that's just one of many Dimebag ideas kept alive at Dean today. This axe screams "metal." Take a listen: with high-output active EMG pickups, a Floyd Rose tremolo, Grover tuners, and solid Dean construction, you'll hear it. Plus, the extended long 25.5-inch scale is great for all the drop-tuners out there.

Dime ItThe late great Dimebag Darrell is a serious metal guitar hero, and Dean's series of Dimebag models pays homage. Dimebag started playing Dean ML style guitars in the late '70s, and made it one of the most recognizable shapes today. Dean offers a wide variety of Dimebag models to choose from, all boasting Dimebag's distinctive look and tons of mojo and attitude.

Mahogany BodyDean uses a mahogany body for this Razorback V.Mahogany is a common choice for electrics, dependably delivering a warm, full tone with plenty of punch and sustain.

Set Neck ConstructionThis axe features a set mahogany neck, which imparts all the well-known advantages of that style: a warmer overall tone with extended low-end response, wicked sustain, and easy upper-fret access (enhanced even further by the cutaways).

The 25.5-inch scale neck features a rosewood fingerboard, decorated with arrow inlays and a "Dime razor" inlay at the 12th fret.

EMG Active PickupsThe Razorback V 255 offers serious tone with its pair of active EMG humbuckers. In the bridge position is a high-output 81. Utilizing powerful ceramic magnets and close aperture coils, the 81 delivers incredible amounts of high end cut and fluid sustain, so your leads can cut through the densest mix.In the neck position the Elite features an 85. It's a slightly more well-rounded version of the aggressive 81. With close aperture coils loaded with Alnico V magnets, the 85 offers plenty of versatility, with a muscular growl and smooth lead tones, perfect for the muddiest of blues to the most extreme metal.

On the electronics front this axe keeps it simple, with a three-way toggle between pickups and volume/tone controls.

Grover TunersIf you play guitar then you know what this means--solid, dependable tuning from the industry standard. These guitar machines are a triumph in engineering and style, with a gear ratio of 14:1, perfect gear meshing, and zero backlash and slippage. The gear box has a special lubricant for lifetime, trouble-free service.
Licensed Floyd Rose TremoloThe patented and often imitated double-locking design of the Floyd Rose tremolo allows you to lock your guitar in tune at the nut and at the bridge. Engineered like no other tremolo system, the Floyd's high-quality steel parts are manufactured to exacting specifications. Beat it up as much as you want--from traditional vibrato to dive bombing leads or flapping loose strings, and stay in tune while you do it.

DBD Traction KnobsDimebag always rocked his "traction knobs," which he created by taking a soldering iron to them, for knobs that are grippable no matter how much sweat's pouring off you on stage. Dean faithfully recreates that here.

DigiTech RP1000 Integrated-Effects Switching System Review

DigiTech RP1000  Integrated-Effects Switching System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is my review of this Multi-effects/amp-modeling/integrated switching system. I have been playing guitar for well over 10 years and have a decent amount of experience with Multi-effects units. I own the Digitech GNX4 and an earlier model BOSS unit with the COSM modeling. I have provided my rating for each individual aspect of the unit and also some comparison with the Boss GT 10, which I think is the only real competitor for this kind of unit and price point.
Effects: Almost all of the effects range from good to excellent. The only one that's actually bad is the harmonizer. Its almost useless. I have GNX4 from 5 years ago and the harmonizer on that is excellent. So this is definitely a step backwards. There is a way to get around it by adding a harmonizer pedal ($200+) into the stomp loop. But come on Digitech, why should I have spend that extra $200? FIX THE DAMN HARMONIZER PLEASE. Also, in the GNX4, you could run Whammy/Harmonizer and effects like chorus/flanger etc together. In the RP1000, you will have to chose between Whammy/Harmonizer and effects. I wish they kept this functionality from GNX4. From what I have seen/heard on You tube, Boss GT10 has better and more effects. I haven't tried the GT10 in person, but to me, quality of RP1000 effects is excellent. I doubt I am missing much (except the Harmonizer of course) (3.5 Stars)
Amp Modeling: This is where this unit shines. I have the GNX4 with the MFX Supermodels CD which is excellent. But I think the quality of the modeling is better in the RP1000. The models are more responsive to touch and sound great to excellent. I went through almost all the amp models. I can really hear the difference between a Fender, Marshall, Vox AC, Mesa etc. Really hard to fault. However, for all you tube amp fanatics out there, I don't think this will satisfy your ears 100%. Also, Boss COSM modeling is not that great compared to RP1000 modeling (4 stars)
Switching system: I have to give kudos to Digitech folks here. They have REALLY done their homework on this one. The 4CM method is pretty useful and allows you to integrate this unit in your existing setup. The stomp loop capability is great. I wonder why Digitech didn't put the amp channel change capability (like GT10)? That would have made this unit a God-send for me. I don't like the fact that if I want to use different channels on my amp, I have to use a different foot switch. Also, having 10 foot switches is way more convenient: 5 for Stompboxes, 5 for presents. Patch changes are quick (slight delay, not too noticeable) and stomp box on/off is instant. Boss GT10 switching system has the same features, but its just not as well laid-out/organized as the RP1000(4 stars if you use 4CM method, 5 stars otherwise)
Ease of use: I have been using the GNX4 for a few years and that was somewhat daunting in the beginning. With that experience, RP1000 is actually easier for me use. I think Digitech took out some of the complexities from the GNX4 and made it lot more user friendly and easily tweak-able in a live situation. I really like how easily you can bypass amp modeling, add in stomp loop, modify effects etc. on the go. X-edit is a decent piece of software as well, but you really don't need it as much as you did for GNX4. RP1000 is a lot easier to use in person. Overall, very well done indeed. Boss GT 10 seems very complicated to me, but again, for folks who have used GT-8 in the past might not be too concerned with that. For someone starting out fresh, you cant beat RP1000 for ease-of-use (5 stars)
Overall: 4.5 Stars. If you are in the market for a Multi-effects/Amp-Modeler unit, just close your eyes and get the RP1000. I don't think you can buy anything better at this price point. Sure, every one is raving about the Axe-FX, but I don't wanna spend 1.5k on an amp modeler. Besides, I like floor unit, not the rack mountable ones. Also, do your homework. Definitely check out Boss GT 10 and then make up your mind.

Bugera BC30-212 Boutique-Style 30-Watt Class-A Valve Guitar Combo Amp with Valve Rectifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this amp approximately a year after purchasing the Bugera 333XL212. I read the descriptions of this amp's abilities, and decided that it would be a nice addition to my amp arsenal, if it only did half of what they claimed it could do. Needless to say, I was surprised with the amp's responsiveness, but I really could not tell what it's true forte was until I started A,B-ing it with other amps, the 333Xl-212 included. Maybe it's the class A wiring, but this amp is all"in your face", compared to other amps. Setting each of the amps as closely as I possibly could, I could tell the BC30-212 tone blindfolded. Other amps sound like the tone is coming from back there while this amp sounds like it's coming from right here. Now factor in the 2 channels, 4 inputs, mismatch speakers, speaker reverse feature,half-power feature and dual effects loops, and you've got an amp that can go a long, long way. This amp is very heavy, and I would recommend installing casters immediately, as I did. I have yet to use but a fraction of the 30 watts available, and I believe that it would be at home in just about any venue. With a price tag at or around $600.00 you can't go wrong. I like to set my controls to a point right before breakup, so that as I pick harder, the amp growls along with a more aggressive attack.

Ovation CK047 Celebrity Acoustic Electric Guitar (Figured Koa Top) Review

Ovation CK047 Celebrity Acoustic Electric Guitar (Figured Koa Top)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The short and sweet version is: the CK047 is a good guitar under any measure; I added the iDea retrofit preamp, and now I have MP3 recording (high quality) and playback (great for jamming!) right on the guitar. I have played for 20 years, and owned a few guitars. I believe I can notice subtleties that differentiate good guitars from plain average. In fact, I went to the store to check an Ovation iDea, but was immediately disappointed... I had never seen a $600 guitar so poorly finished, as the iDea was (what a flop, Ovation, what a flop...) Anyway, that is when I discovered the CK047. I compared the CK047 against a dozen other guitars on the store. The acoustic sound is superior to many brands. This guitar, however, does not have the best acoustic performance; for instance, Taylor is far superior to Ovation... But when it comes to plugged sound, nothing beats an Ovation. Koa wood gives a rich sound that is not very bright (something totally desirable when you amplify). I bought this guitar as a practice instrument for normal wear and tear, while I keep the high-end guitars for recording and occasional jamming. The tuning pegs are standard Ovation (very precise, keeps it tuned). The finish on the top is very well done; incredibly beautiful, and honors the natural warmth of the wood. This guitar is *very* precise: the first harmonic on every fret matches perfectly the note 12 frets below. The action is low and smooth. Now, a note about origin, as it seems to be a matter of interest: The CK047 is Korean. It does not have the aura that accompanies American-made guitars, but the finish is just as high-quality as you would expect from an American guitar (clarification: Celebrities are mid-level models; only high-end models are made in the USA... had I had extra$1,000 I would have bought an American Ovation). Ovation has been making guitars in Korea for a while, and it shows. I compared this guitar against other Chinese celebrities (the koa Celebrity is only made in Korea, though), and I have to acknowledge that Chinese models' finish is of the lowest quality. Warning: AS OF 2008, STAY AWAY FROM CHINESE OVATION CELEBRITY MODELS... they are hit or miss (mostly miss). Out of six Chinese Ovation Celebrity guitars I compared against the CK047, only one had decent finishing and sound. No doubt the quality will eventually increase, but in the meantime...

Dean Edge 8-String Bass, Active Electronics, Classic Black Review

Dean Edge 8-String Bass, Active Electronics, Classic Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, I decided to buy an 8-string and learn how to play it, since I was already uver-used to playing the 4-string. You know,I wanted that high-end dominance that the 8-string provides.
This bass does all of that, and has active pickups to boot. Not that they are particularly the best active pickups (the battery dies out a little early for my tastes), but they get the job done - and can blast the hell out of a sound system with an impressive overdrive knob.
The tone is really good, by all means. Unlike the Schecter Stilletto 8, the first few frets don't buzz when you use them, and the thing maintains the octave-harmonics effect even when you use tapping or slapping effects. The strings feel really good on the fingers, and it's no problem to slide while keeping an even sound. The only problem I have is that, if one tries to use an octave string alone, it will not sound off as highly as the fat strings, which makes it a little less fun.
I would say that this is a worthwhile buy for those just starting on the 8-string, because it is reliable, has one of the best sound-qualities, and fits a good budget at $500.

An Exception To The Rule- It is often said the "beauty is skin deep". The Dean Edge Bass is clearly the exception to the rule! While beauty was the inspiration of the Dean Edge, we put every bit of our 20 plus years of design experience into these models. We started with a body styled and contoured for comfort and the choice basswood to make them lighter. The maple necks were profiled to be faster and sleeker than virtually all other. We designed a "uniquely Dean" custom neck joint and heel along with our asymmetrical 4 bolt pattern creating uninterrupted access all the way up the two octave neck. The Edge Bass is offered in four, five, six and eight string models. Squier by Fender Vintage Modified Jazz Bass '77, Black Review

Squier by Fender Vintage Modified Jazz Bass '77, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Squier Vintage Modified '77 Jazz Bass is an inexpensive jazz bass from Indonesia with good features and very good workmanship and is a great value for the money. Although mine was shipped with round-wound strings, I put on half-rounds for a somewhat mellower sound. But if you like rounds, you will love what you hear right out of the box.
The bass is black on black, with 'vintage' knobs, decent tuners, and the standard Fender-type bass bridge. I swapped out the bridge for a Gotoh 201 C and the difference was amazing: added clarity, better tone; and the 201, at $35, is heavy, solid, and inexpensive (from Warmoth). The swap is direct. Be aware that the 201 barrels are bigger than the ones you're replacing; a neck shim may be in order. (Not a big deal.)
A heavy bass, but nicely balanced. I use a broad leather strap with an unfinished underside for good grip, and I have no problems. Pickups are 'Duncan Designed' -- take that for what it's worth. Each alone is unremarkable, but when dialed up together the great, punchy jazz bass tone comes through.
The fretboard is nicely bound in white; fret markers are 'pearloid'; why don't they just call it plastic? The neck is satin-finish maple, narrow but not too shallow, very comfortable. Strap buttons are nice and secure, and all other hardware is snugly in place; nothing stripped, broken, or improperly aligned.
For my money, this is a bass that can do it all. Half-rounds mellow the tone a bit, but I can get a nice deep round tone or an aggressive punch simply by varying attack and juggling pickup tones.
$285 from a wholesaler that has 'sweet' in its name, plus $35 for the new bridge. Great value.

It's a retro-inspired gloss black beauty with Duncan Designed' Jazz Bass pickups, black plastic Stratocaster knobs, one-piece maple neck with white binding and white pearl block inlays, 20-fret maple fingerboard, and a three-ply black/white/black pickguard.

Epiphone Thunderbird PRO-V Electric Bass Guitar, Natural Oil Review

I Like this bass alot everything is great the feel the action, it just seems to me like a very well built bass overall. The only main issue I have on this is it has very poor pickup of the Low B string. I thought it might of been my bass but I recently tried another one and it had the same problem, then I started doing some of my own research and found alot of other people have the same issues and there are many other reviews on this problem. E thru G Strings sound great! you just can barely here the Low B String. I think outside of that everything else is great on this bass.

Dear Epiphone Customer,
We regret to inform you that we have discovered that a SMALL percentage of defective T-PRO(tm) pickups were installed in some of our Epiphone Thunderbird PRO-V basses (5-string ONLY). These pickups were incorrectly made and therefore, cause the low-B string (or 5th string) to have a very low output level (ie: low volume) relative to the other 4 strings. While all PRO-V basses are NOT affected, the extent of the problem dictates that we notify you of this potential defect and take immediate action to correct it.
* If you purchased an Epiphone Thunderbird PRO-V (5-string) bass and the output level of the low-B string is LOW (ie: much quieter than the other 4 strings) please contact our Customer Service department either by email or by phone as follows. Remember - please check your bass first. Not all PRO-V's are affected. PRO-IV's (4-strings) do not have this problem.

If determined to be defective, we will arrange to have your bass picked up and returned to Epiphone to have new pickup(s) installed, thoroughly tested and then returned to you promptly. When you contact Customer Service, please make sure you have your serial number available.
* Additionally, we are in the process of testing all Thunderbird PRO-V basses at our authorized Epiphone retailers worldwide to determine if they need pickup replacements. If they do, we will be either repairing them on-site or re-calling them. As a result, future purchasers of Thunderbird PRO-V basses will not experience this problem.
In closing, we sincerely apologize for this problem and the inconvenience. At Epiphone, we pride ourselves on our passionate attention to quality and our historically low return rate of less than 0.5%. In this case however, we failed to meet our own standards not to mention yours. Rest assured that we have taken aggressive and appropriate action to ensure that this will not occur in the future.

Gold Tone Paul Beard Signature Series PBS-M Squareneck Resonator Guitar (Vintage Mahogany) Review

Gold Tone Paul Beard Signature Series PBS-M Squareneck Resonator Guitar (Vintage Mahogany)

I bought one of these for Christmas. Saw some youtubes of people playing them, and I had to have one. I play the blues with it. Very cool instrument. This one, the PBSM is a beautiful instrument with a very warm sound. Mahogany. It lends itself very well to the typical minor key blues I play. I use mine tuned in open D (DADF#AD), but others typically play it in GBDGBD for bluegrass. I have had a Schatten pickup installed on it, and also mic it with an old Peavey instrument mic. Sometimes I run it through a guitar multieffects pedal with a chorus effect and delay, which really expands the sound.

Norman Encore B20 High Gloss Guitar Review

Norman Encore B20 High Gloss Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our nonprofit, Guitars in the CLassroom, receives donations of guitars for use with the teachers we instruct; among those we receive, Godin provides us with the best guitars from the companies who support us, Kaman, Martin (yes, Martin!), Saga, etc. This B20 just came back from a teacher to whom we had loaned it for her use in the Classroom with her students, as she has now purchased her own - probably not as amazing as this loaner was! When I played it, I was blown away with the power and tone....and the construction detail was superb (and I assume we are getting Blems or 2nds....but I can't tell what the defect might be.) Buy one of these, and revel in what a true large acoustic can do for both group singing and recording. What a sweet guitar! Thanks Godin....

The B20 is the foundation of all the Norman guitars. The solid spruce top and lacquer finish alone distinguish this guitar. The three-layer laminate of cherry wood used in the back and sides of the B20 produces a tone that sounds warmer than maple but brighter than a mahogany guitar. The B20's tone works beautifully for recording and blends nicely when amplified on stage.
