Norman Encore B20 High Gloss Guitar Review

Norman Encore B20 High Gloss Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Our nonprofit, Guitars in the CLassroom, receives donations of guitars for use with the teachers we instruct; among those we receive, Godin provides us with the best guitars from the companies who support us, Kaman, Martin (yes, Martin!), Saga, etc. This B20 just came back from a teacher to whom we had loaned it for her use in the Classroom with her students, as she has now purchased her own - probably not as amazing as this loaner was! When I played it, I was blown away with the power and tone....and the construction detail was superb (and I assume we are getting Blems or 2nds....but I can't tell what the defect might be.) Buy one of these, and revel in what a true large acoustic can do for both group singing and recording. What a sweet guitar! Thanks Godin....

The B20 is the foundation of all the Norman guitars. The solid spruce top and lacquer finish alone distinguish this guitar. The three-layer laminate of cherry wood used in the back and sides of the B20 produces a tone that sounds warmer than maple but brighter than a mahogany guitar. The B20's tone works beautifully for recording and blends nicely when amplified on stage.

Yamaha FS720S Acoustic Guitar, Natural Review

My step-son and I decided to take guitar lessons and soon after decided to go get a guitar for my birthday. We talked to the salesman at guitar center who explained the differences between a few models. This one was labeled as folk guitar meaning it has a narrower waist- it also has a solid spruce top rather than laminate. For us the narrow waist felt natural and light. The second the salesman played it, we could hear the obvious difference that the spruce made, it sounded vibrant and bright. I can't say enough about how much we love this guitar. GREAT buy for the money.

The heritage of Yamaha guitars begins with the FG line of acoustic guitars. Choice woods, the finest craftsmanship and a smaller folk style body make the FS720S an individual alternative to the larger bodied FG. Precise, smooth response and a sweet, focused tone make this a great choice for recording or fingerpicking.

Taylor's offering in Indian rosewood, the 800 Series traces its roots to the earliest Taylors. Bob Taylor's latest design changes speak of traditional lutherie in the form of hand-set, figured maple binding--it's a gorgeous upgrade that complements the beautiful hues of rosewood and sparkling inlay work. The exquisite 814ce brings together the unmistakable tone of rosewood, true Taylor styling, and the versatility of a Grand Auditorium body. A Venetian cutaway and Expression System pickup complete the perfect picking package.

Taylor's Grand Auditorium ShapeThe Grand Auditorium was the first guitar shape designed from scratch by Bob Taylor. It was unveiled to commemorate the company's 20th Anniversary in 1994, and since then it has more than lived up to its promise. Although the GA has the width and depth of a Dreadnought, its narrower waist gives it the appearance of a smaller instrument, adds treble "zing" across the guitars tonal spectrum, sharpens the definition of individual notes, and also enables it to rest comfortably in the lap. Because Taylor removed mass from the width of the GAs braces, the guitar top moves faster, resulting in a snappy, bell-like tone. The GA is designed to be a strong fingerpicking guitar that also can handle medium strumming, and is exceptionally versatile.
Features maple binding that complements the beautiful hues of rosewood and sparkling inlay work.

This is my first new guitar. Its great and plays really nicely. i did not want to spend a fortune on a guitar and liked the look of this model. I realised that it was a guitar built to a price but i was still very impressed by its playability. I have made a few improvements. I had it professionally set up with a bone saddle and nut and replaced the strings with elixir lights, also replaced the pins with ebony. This whole process cost another $200 but boy was it worth it. Has a soft Martin like sound now with really nice highs. the action is great and I can recommend having any new guitar like this set up professionally with these few changes. Had a friend who plays well and owns a D28 around for tea. He played this guitar all night and was seriously impressed. The extra work has made this guitar sound fantastic and its deffinatly a keeper. Its also incredibly beautiful. With just these few changes has made a mediocre bargain basement laminate a real gem.

2011 purchase. I absolutely love my new 615ce. It's perfect, has a great balanced sound, strong even blend. It's amazing with finger picking and I'm finding its sweet spot for strumming. The ES electronics is bizzar. I wish I could have found more reviews that weren't promotional materials to understand the problems with this pick-up system. Maybe in time I'll find a solution... or just put a better system in the guitar. Currently the high B and E strings are louder than the rest of the strum. They stick out and make the sound unbalanced... totally unlike the amazing natural sound of the guitar. I even sent it back to Taylor for them to work on it... but it came back to me sounding pretty much the same. I would give the guitar a 5 star... but I mainly play live and plugged in... which is not enhancing the bands overall sound. OUCH. YUCK. I've put other guitars in our system and can make them beautiful sounding. I worked on the Taylor in our system for 1/2 hour and never came up with a satisfactory sound... until I put a mic on it, which then instantly made it sound the way it's supposed to. After spending so much money on a guitar, I wish it would sound on stage like it does in the privacy of the show-room or my living room... especially since that's exactly what Taylor is promoting their ES to do. I feel like I've been lied to... hood-winked. The emperor has no clothes... "It's a great system, the best." All of Taylor's promotion says in videos and written. UMMM... are you hearing the same thing I am? Please listen to the guitar in the store and check the system out first before buying... and try two or three kinds of amps just to be sure you know what your dealing with. I hope and pray my attitude about this pick-up will change over time. Maybe there is just something I'm missing that I've never missed in my 25 years of playing and sound mixing.

A signature quality of Big Leaf maple - besides its crisp, bright tone - is its ability to cut through on stage. As a result, you'll find many 600 Series guitars in live performance situations, easily able to hold their own with the rest of the band. The 600 Series is a visual standout, too: Its jaw-dropping maple figure is available in a selection of natural, color and sunburst finishes.

Typically I've not been a huge fan of Taylor guitars. Their quality is certainly impeccable, but the tone is generaly to bright for my taste. This model floored me. I grabbed it in a store just to compare with a Gibson I was checking out and was amazed. Strong lows, balanced mids, and bright highs. Just outstanding!
Personal preference is really everything in guitar purchasing. There is no right or wrong, just what "you" like. Taylor really got this one right....for me.

The Taylor 714-CE Grand Auditorium Cutaway Acoustic-Electric Guitar combines the full-bodied sound of Indian rosewood with the responsiveness of a Western red cedar top to create a finger style workhorse. Equipped with the Taylor Expression System and cutaway, it has the tools to shine in any music venue. A Western red cedar top coupled with a rosewood body provides the ultimate in responsiveness without sacrificing tone. The grand auditorium body design combines the width and depth of a dreadnought with a narrower waist. Its sleek design yields a strong treble zing across the tonal spectrum and sharpens the definition of individual notes. The Taylor Grand Auditorium is a strong finger picking guitar that also adapts well to medium strumming. An abalone soundhole rosette and the Indian rosewood binding and headstock overlay are warm, natural accents to the Taylor 714-CE. Designed to faithfully reproduce your guitar's native tone, the Expression System utilizes patented Dynamic Sensors to capture top and string vibration like never before. Created in partnership with renowned audio pioneer, Rupert Neve, the Taylor ES is seamlessly integrated into the design of the guitar from the ground up. Onboard tone controls provide added flavor, or set flat for an uncolored, exceptionally clean amplified sound. The finish used to create this guitar's lustrous gloss top, back, and sides was developed at Taylor for maximum durability and resistance to cold-checking. This ultraviolet-cured finish is also more environmentally friendly than traditional lacquer finishes.

Taylor Guitars 310ce Dreadnought Acoustic Electric Guitar Review

Taylor Guitars 310ce Dreadnought Acoustic Electric Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guitar is amazing. It is very crisp and bright so it is great for finger picking. Taylor is the new premier guitar maker. I was going to get a Gibson but they don't have different size necks. The neck on a Taylor, which is real ebony, is not even glued on so a repair guy can change the angle in ten minutes. Also the fretboard and neck continue up into the body, intead of the neck stopping and the fretboard resting on the body. When a neck bends it caused a bump at the 14 fret. Taylor has fixed this problem. Their pickup is the best. Research it before you spend money. The 300 series is the cheapest line with the expression system (yeah!!) A mint vintage Gibson is worth 100,000 and that is why they are not changing there technology. But there is better technology nowadays. Why not use it. The finish on a Taylor is UV cured in ten minutes. This shaves 3 days and a bit of money off the cost of the guitar. The wood doesn't warp in those three days. Also, the finish only has ten minutes to sink into the pores. I think that has something to do with the tone. I own the 314ce and it's bright tone is great for finger picking and strumming. The dreadnaught is supposed to be better for pure strumming. The best guitars for tone are supposed to be Gibson, Martin, Taylor and Takamine and all have a pretty large list of pro players but Taylor is taking off. Look at the list on there website. There are some other good one out there. This guitar is too sweet though. I never feel the need to review almost anythng but I am going to copy this and paste it on the other Taylor guitars, not just the 314ce. --pickup, neck finish and TONE!

The 310ce a true performer's workhorse, combining technology and craftsmanship with understated style. A Venetian cutaway adds dimension to classic Dreadnought styling, while the tone of Sapele is faithfully amplified via the Taylor Expression System. Crisp, black binding flanks the satin-finish Sapele back and sides and glossy Sitka spruce top, and then continues up the fretboard.

Taylor's DreadnoughtThe original Dreadnought acoustic guitar appeared early in the 20th Century, and its no-frills, no-nonsense shape made it a logical namesake of the huge battleships of that day. Most subsequent Dreadnoughts, including Taylor's, have been derivative of that early design. In 1997, however, Bob Taylor re-designed the Taylor Dreadnought by softening the curves at the top and bottom and generally refining its overall shape. In 2003, gloss-finish Dreadnoughts also underwent bracing refinements that substantially increased their overall volume and bass response, without sacrificing Taylor's signature balance and clarity. Dreadnought six-strings shine as "plectrum" or "rhythm" guitars because they respond well to flatpicking or light-to-heavy strumming.

A Venitian cutaway in the 310ce Dreadnought body allows better access to the upper frets. In the past, many players moving to acoustic guitars grew accustomed to the cutaways on their electric guitars, while others simply like the freedom of movement into the upper register that a cutaway allows. Now, cutaways are favored as much for their decorative appeal as for their function.
Features ebony wood fretboard and bridge and Venetian cutaway.

Taylor Guitars DN3 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar Review

I have had my dn3 for about a year and a half. It all started one day I went with my son to Guitar Center. We went into the acoustic room and proceeded to play nearly every guitar there. I already owned a Taylor Big Baby, so I was a bit partial to them. The sound is so pleasing to my ears. Anyway, I wanted to like a lot of the guitars, but I didn't. In fact, almost every time I picked one up I was disappointed by what I heard, except when I picked up the dn3. Not only did it sound beautiful, it actually sang in my hands. With every strum it sang again and again and again. I kept looking at it thinking it was alive. After a year and a half with my dn3, playing it for my own pleasure, song writing and worship leading, it continues to sing each and every time I play it. I often play with others in worship and I have to sometimes bite my tongue wanting to tell some of them to get a real guitar. For years I felt that like person - the one who plays, but just always feels like they don't have the instrument they need to truly sound beautiful. Now I do, and I'm loving it. I know that there are higher end Taylors that look more beautiful. I would love to have a guitar that has all the abalone inlays and such, but by far the most important thing to me is sound. Yes, your guitar is pretty, and has decent action and playability, but how does it sound? Mine sounds like heaven.

The heralded Dreadnought is the most traditional of all acoustics. By definition, it's a battleship of a guitar and the Taylor DN3 pays tribute to that legacy--and then some. The DN3s booming bass and articulate mids dare you to dig in and challenge your flatpicking prowess. Simple, traditional styling and renowned Taylor craftsmanship make this sapele and spruce acoustic guitar one of Taylor's most popular models.

I purchased this guitar from a local retailer. I sat down and played EVERY high end acoustic guitar in the store, and quite a few lower models. This guitar is absolutely hands down the winner! The neck plays like a dream, set up perfectly at the factory. The action was set kind of low, but there was zero fret buzz! The sound that came out of this thing blew me away, a beautiful combination of high end and low end with a projection that made every note absolutely clear and concise. This guitar has enough natural volume that it could be mistaken for being plugged in when it is not! Whether you play finger style or pick style you will fall in love with this guitar. The only other guitar that compares in sound with this one is a high end Martin, but that is where it ends, the Martins are borderline unplayable compared to the Taylor. If you ever played a Martin you know what I am talking about, beautiful sound, play like crap. This Taylor rules the roost. Plug in to your amp with this and you get a super clear sounding angels from heaven sound.I have owned many acoustics over the last twenty five years, Gibson, Fender, Takamine, Seagull, Ovation. All those guitars always left me chasing a sound I could not find. I have had this Taylor for almost two years now, and I have nothing bad to say about this guitar. Go play one yourself, and compare. I guarantee you will agree.

Taylor Guitars Baby Taylor, BT2, Mahogany, Natural Review

Taylor Guitars Baby Taylor, BT2, Mahogany, Natural
Average Reviews:

A PERSONAL OPINION. The Taylor BT2 is a really nice guitar. I did not say The Taylor BT2 is a really nice little guitar. Why? We could talk about guitar size, shape, wood type, action, nut size, and acoustics but it is easier to just say, this guitar is very easy to play and sounds much bigger than it really is. I bought this guitar to carry to parties and family gatherings (I'm the lease musically talented in my family but I got guts) as I was getting tired of toting my big Ovation back and fourth. This little guitar with the big voice was just what I was looking for. Fact is, I messed around trying to buy a used Baby Taylor off eBay and found this guitar sells for $220 to $305 USED. Shoot, I bought a new one for $299. This is a very nice guitar and I am sure the model BT1 is good too; I just like mahogany better than spruce. I recommend this Baby Taylor to anyone as a first guitar or as in my case, a second.

An alternate version of the original Baby Taylor substitutes a solid mahogany top, giving this 3/4-size Dreadnought a dark, attractive complexion and a mid-range boost.

The Baby Taylor Series The Baby Taylor is the ultimate travel companion, delivering volume and tone that surprise for its diminutive dimensions. At three-quarters the size of a full-sized guitar, the Baby Taylor lives for the road. It also loves little hands, which makes it an irresistible choice for kids taking lessons. Available with either a solid spruce or solid mahogany top.
Tropical American Mahogany Top Mahogany is supple enough to make excellent, responsive bodies, yet sufficiently strong and stable to use in necks. Mahogany produces a bright, clear tone, with a unique balance that yields an expressive dynamic range in response to even the lightest touch. This makes Taylor's 500 Series guitars especially popular with fingerstyle guitarists and blues players, and it gives this particular Baby Taylor great looks and a more pronounced mid-range.
Sapele Laminate Back/Sides This exceptional, mahogany-like wood grows throughout the tropical rain forests of Nigeria and the Ivory Coast of Africa. Ever since we introduced it in 1998, its legion of fans has grown exponentially. As a tonewood, it's denser and harder than mahogany, so it has a crisper, clearer, brighter, "pop"-ier sound than its more familiar counterpart. Loud and robust, with a lovely ribboned grain, sapele has been used by Spanish guitar makers for many years.
Dreadnought Body ShapeThe original Dreadnought acoustic guitar appeared early in the 20th Century, and its no-frills, no-nonsense shape made it a logical namesake of the huge battleships of that day. Most subsequent Dreadnoughts, including Taylor's, have been derivative of that early design. Dreadnought six-strings shine as "plectrum" or "rhythm" guitars because they respond well to flatpicking or light-to-heavy strumming.
Varnish FinishA durable varnish finish offers protection, good looks, and a smooth feel to the touch. The spruce top's beauty shines right through.
