Epiphone EF-500RCCE Masterbilt Collection Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Fingerstyle Neck, Natural Satin Review

Epiphone EF-500RCCE Masterbilt Collection Acoustic-Electric Guitar, Fingerstyle Neck, Natural Satin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a lifelong finger-style guitarist it takes a lot to impress me. Looks, sound, intonation, action, string spacing, the works. I found a factory 2nd EF-500RCCE that had some visual blems, and a pickup only under the saddle (earlier model), but after playing it for 3 hours straight the day it arrived I knew that it was THE guitar I had been looking for.
I have relative pitch so I can really tell when an instrument sounds off-pitch or has audible issues. The intonation all the way up and down the fretboard of the EF-500RCCE is as good as I could ever hope for with ANY guitar. I rarely have to adjust the tuning because it stays in tune day after day after day. I keep it humidified while in its case, and always wipe it down after playing (body, neck, and fretboard/strings).
The EF-500RCCE sounds like a dream; beautiful rich tone, surprisingly decent bass, mids that just fill the air, and higher tones that ring like a bell. Great overall projection with wonderful overtones. Epiphone (Gibson) really nailed this design! On my particular guitar the action was just a little low and the outer ends of the frets needed some smoothing, but these were minor refinements. I can play so much better and faster on this guitar than any other acoustic I've ever played - even a $3500 Martin guitar for finger-style guitarists.
I play this guitar VERY often, and it just keeps sounding better and better. I'll be getting another EF-500RCCE eventually, one that has a nicer fit and finish - and with the E-Sonic2 preamp and pickups. That way I can keep one at home as my studio acoustic.
Note: The nut is advertised as 1.75" wide. It actually measures at 1.70" using a digital caliper.
Also, the wide string spacing at the compensated saddle measures 2.37" - for finger-style guitarists.
Further, the neck contour is not the advertised "V" shape. It's actually more of a "D" shape with a perfect rounded thickness. I find its design to be absolutely perfect for me.
The EF-500RCCE has a neck thickness of .953" on the 5th fret (including strings). For comparison, a Gibson Les Paul Special (circa 2001) measures .905" thick on the 5th fret (with strings). The EF-500RCCE neck, overall, is a little fatter than the Les Paul.
Even at $1000 (street), this guitar is a great value. At this price, though, it's a no-brainer!!

i picked up this inexpensive acoustic/electric for playing at worship. I've owned electric acoustic guitars in the past and was very excited to find a slim roundback guitar that has good, reliable and consistent sound. It sounds good with or without the amp. The strings that came with it were a bit 'horsey' so I replaced them with lighter/brighter strings. It's quick to tune and holds tune well in inclimate weather. After three months, I decided that I like it enough to get rid of my electric guitar altogether. I'll probably upgrade to a more expensive version from Ovation -- I like it so much, I'm kind of wishing I had bought one of the upper-end models now.

I shopped guitars in the $1000 - $1600 price range for months, and the SWS mini-jumbo is better than most. It really can't be beat for this price, especially since I bought it on sale through Amazon. The sound is full and mellow, and the short scale, thin neck and 1.8" nut width make it a joy to play. It sounds great strummed, picked, acoustically or plugged in.

Washburn D10 Series Acoustic Electric Cutaway Guitar Review

Washburn D10 Series Acoustic Electric Cutaway Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered this guitar as an upgrade to an older, starter Washburn guitar that I absolutely loved, though I probably should have taken better care of it. When I ordered this new guitar I didn't expect anything more than another great Washburn guitar.
Holy crap, I opened the box only to find that it came in an awesome hard case! Nowhere on the page when I ordered did it say it came with a case. It's a very nice, Washburn hard case, with a sweet felt or something inside. That was a very pleasant surprise indeed.
Aside from the case, this guitar also has a great built in pickup. I had to play a show the night I got the guitar and it sounded great. I did replace the strings with some better ones. The strings it came with sounded okay, just a little light and weak, especially when the guitar was plugged into an amp. With some new strings it sounded and played great.
The pickup has a great built in tuner. I've heard others saying the guitar doesn't stay in tune very well, though I haven't had that experience. I have kept it in it's case when I'm not playing it and like I said I put new strings on.
Overall, the action on the guitar is great. So smooth and easy to play. The build quality is way better than a lot of guitars that are way more expensive. The sound of the guitar is very full and rich. The case was a bonus.

Gibson AJ Advanced Jumbo Guitar, Vintage Sunburst Review

Gibson AJ Advanced Jumbo Guitar, Vintage Sunburst
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As far as I'm concerned, this is exactly what acoustic guitars should sound like. You might find more silky or strident highs elsewhere, or more punchy lows from an old martin, and there are plenty of other guitars that excel at one particular element of timbre and tone (though you'd likely pay much more for them), but the advanced jumbo is the complete package! Balanced, delicate, powerful, and resonant, with enveloping depth and richness. Everything comes through clearly, no dominant strings or chords. The tones are nicely complex without getting confused or muddled. The neck is on the thin side which some people may dislike, but it's not anemic. Binding over the fret ends was sloppily finished between the heel and soundhole, and the plastic bridge pins and strap peg seem a little cheaply made, but both are easily remedied. Looking at it, it's about like you'd expect a $2000 acoustic to be. Close your eyes and play, and those little things are quickly forgotten. Beautiful. You can't come close to this kind of sound without paying a heck of a lot more.

Beautifully constructed and finished, amazing sound either acoustic or plugged.
This guitar is wonderful, just 2 weeks playing and it works very well. The woods give you a bright tone but sweet at the same time, the balance between bass and treble is wonderful. Very comfortable to play either with your fingers or with a pick.
When you play it acoustic it sounds incredible but when you plugged it is when you find its real value, the preamp itself sounds good but when you include the on board tube on the chain the sound is huge, sweetly compressed as only tubes can. No more boomy bass on a guitar, you can understand every detail. I have even played on some concerts with it and everyone at my band is amazed. Nice choice. I made an extensive research and found this like the one I was searching for... now that I own it, I can proudly say that I was right.

Yamaha CPX900 Acoustic Electric Guitar, Ultramarine Review

Yamaha CPX900 Acoustic Electric Guitar, Ultramarine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This was my Christmas present to myself last year & my wife is jealous. She is tired of me saying "I love this guitar"! Read all the reviews that I could find online and when I went to the 2 local music stores (SA & GC) they didn't have any to play, so I bought without playing. Since it arrived, it has lived up to everything I've read. Right out of the box the appearance is rich with the gold tuners, pearl inlays (I have the sunburst finish). The sound is beatiful, warm, sustaining...and with the hole cover & A.R.T. system, I can plug into the amp & not worry about feedback. Use to play out quite regularly before the kids, but then took a 10 yr. hiatus. We've gotten 'the band back together' for a few gigs the past yr or so & have some coming up so I can't wait to play this puppy live! The onboard tuner & EQ are sweet and allow me to control everything at the guitar, not having to go back & forth to my amp. I would highly recommend for the money. I've played with the Martins & Taylors in the $1500 range & this is definitely of that class of quality. You won't be disappointed!Yamaha CPX900 Acoustic Electric Guitar, Brown Burst

Ovation Elite T Series Mid Depth Acoustic-Electric Guitar with Case Review

Ovation Elite T Series Mid Depth Acoustic-Electric Guitar with Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guitar is a wonderful example of the innovative spirit at Ovation. The entire body of the guitar has a textured enamel finish that gives it a toughness suitable for stage use and frequent handling. It comes in Pewter and Black. Amazingly, Ovation has engineered this coating so that it actually contributes to the projection of the guitar as opposed to deadening it, as you would expect. The 1778t has an unusual array of soundholes and a special bracing pattern that also contribute to its projection.
The guitar has a low action and the narrow Ovation neck making it very playable by someone with small hands. The action would also make it an excellent first "good" guitar.
The solid spruce top, even though hidden under the enamel finish, has a mellow tone especially at the low end, UNAMPLIFIED.
The on board preamplifier has two preset sound shape settings that, to be honest, are beyond my comprehension. They are likely useful to a professional musician. It also has a built in equalizer to personalize the sound of your guitar. In addition, the OP30 electronics has a built in electronic tuner! You do NOT need an amplifier to use the tuner.
The 1778t is an "acoustic-electric" guitar. That means it can be played without or with an amplifier. Either way, it sounds fantastic!

Ovation S771 Special Balladeer Mid-Depth Acoustic-Electric Guitar (Natural) Review

Ovation S771 Special Balladeer Mid-Depth Acoustic-Electric Guitar (Natural)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My personal feeling is that, while Yamaha might make a guitar that plays well and accurately, their sound is overly light and flat. It is a very accurate sound, but it is cold. Maybe the guitar is just too heavy, too well glued, too strong. But I wanted one and my wife said, "I don't think I could stand hearing you practice on a Yamaha. I'm going guitar shopping with you. I have to listen to your practice and I want something that is pleasant to listen to."When I played this guitar I just fell in love with the action. It was well set up, all the resonances were right, and when I placed my fingers, they fit. The sound was great. I had been trying some cheaper Martins and this was as good as the better examples. Mellow, resonant, rich. And they were not as playable. Ovation combines good playability with excellent acoustics in the Balladeer. Their carbon fiber models may sound just as good when amplified, but if you are going to play acoustically much or most of the time, well, the sound of the wood top is just warmer. Ovation makes claims that the sound of the new a-frame is better, and, well, for once, the claims of being able to transmit string vibrations without muffling them "sound" justified. Despite modern manufacturing practices, individual acoustic guitars sound, well, individual. Wood has grain, and small differences in grain can significantly change the sound of the guitar. Ovation's limited lifetime warranty (which, of course, does not cover fret wear) does not cover changes in intonation since "that is subjective".It might be worth checking in at http://www.ovationguitars.com for information about construction and features. The balladeer comes with the Ovation OP30 electronics. There is a piezoelectric pickup in the bridge and the OP30 has a built in tuner, a volume slider, and a bass, midrange, and treble control. Turning on the tuner cuts off the pre-amp so not everyone hears you tune (they will still hear you acoustically). You can also tune one string to someone who is off (provided they are not a whole tone off, if they are, you have to subtract or add scale notes) and then "make that string right" and tune the guitar relative to the off string. The piezo pickup actually sits between the bridge and body (you can't see it), and picks up exactly what is transmitted by the strings to the top. The pickups amplify any vibration of the top or strings, and work on other models that use nylon strings (this model is a steel string guitar) because they don't use magnetics. This means that if you do plug in, you retain the acoustic sound, rather than suddenly getting a "twangy" magnetic pickup sound. The OP30 is a Ovation's low end electronics package. What you are missing that is in the OP40 is a second midrange control, and in the OP50, a notch filter. Even with a small practice amp, I get one string resonating when open, and a notch filter could "fix" that.If you did buy a higher end electronics module, you could just swap it in a few seconds. The module is powered by a standard 9V alkaline battery, which will run the preamp for about 250 hours. The battery can be changed quickly with no tools - literally, if a roadie had the new battery unwrapped you could pop the preamp out, slide the cover off, swap batteries, replace the cover and pop the preamp back in in 20 seconds. Unplugging the guitar turns off the preamp and saves the battery. This is a wonderful sounding, playable guitar. You need the Ovation hard case (should be no more than $80) which exactly fits the roundback. And if you have a wood guitar, you will need a good quality wax for the neck and guitar polish for the top and body. And if you live where there are humidity extremes, you will want a case humidifier. Relatively constant humidity is wood's friend. Some balladeer models have no "dots" inlaid on the front of the neck next to the frets (there are guide dots on the playing side) and I like the plain look combined with the inlay around the soundhole. YMMV.

Ovation continues its more than 30 years of relentless improvement of the Balladeer. 1861 BALLADEER Acoustic Electric Guitar Black Black Review

1861 BALLADEER Acoustic Electric Guitar Black Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been a guitarist for over 24 years now, and I have owned this model guitar for nearly 6 years now, and it always amazes me that an acoustic guitar can keep playing this well after constant use.
First let me say that the neck is hard as a rock! I have NEVER needed a truss-rod adjustment yet! The fretboard is similar to a fast neck that you might find on a top notch electric guitar...It's very fast, very thin, and super easy to play on. Great for the lead/solo player, as well as any other style of music you're after. Also features an onboard pre-amp & EQ, and when plugged-in, this baby produces some wonderful tone. Stunning!
About the only drawback to Ovations, is the fact that they feature the rounded plastic back. The fact that it's a composite material is NOT the problem...The problem is that the guitar sometimes has a tendency to slip off your leg, if you're not paying attention. It's just one of those "little annoyances" that come with Ovation ownership. :)
The only other drawback, (and it's a very MINOR one) is that this model is a shallow-back. Meaning it's not very deep, and it doesn't throw the sound too far. It really needs to be plugged in to an amp to show it's true potential. Again, even if played unplugged, it's still a fine guitar, and it's definetely plenty loud enough for home use without an amp. Anyway, even with those 2 minor annoyances, I'm keeping mine until hell freezes over, and I'm buying another Ovation soon (12-String).......That's how much I love these beauties!
Bottom Line:
If you want a fine American made acoustic guitar (that you can actually afford), that sounds, plays & looks gorgeous, this one's for you!

Recently traded in a 4 month old Epiphone Chet Atkins model for this guitar. Also have a Martin D-16RGTE Premium and this guitar sounds better! Our band plays bluegrass about 2 times a week at local pubs, etc. It gets lots of use and sounds great using a condensor microphone. Also gets a lot of looks due to the "old-timey" look. This guitar has a great feel, almost familiar. Great case included! The only issue is the hygrometer always reads "70". If that worked,I would rate it at 5 1/2!

Yamaha APX900 - Natural Acoustic Electric Cutaway Guitar Review

Yamaha APX900 - Natural Acoustic Electric Cutaway Guitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Why this is a good guitar
Thinline acoustic-electrics are not known for their acoustic tone, but the APX900's tone is acceptable for at-home strumming and practice and even light sing-along duty. It sounds a little dull acoustically and it's not particularly loud, but that's an acceptable compromise to limit feedback when plugged in. The amplified tone is bright--or it can be whatever you want it to be, from dark and thumpy to incisive, from a laid-back tone to jangly with the mids cut and the bass and treble turned up. Like any acoustic-electric, it feeds back if you get in front of the amplifier or your PA speaker, but a provided heavy rubber soundhole plug reduces feedback.
It's hard to find a mid-priced acoustic-electric thinline guitar that doesn't sound thin or brassy, but Yamaha's unique multiple contact pickups sound better than the typical under-saddle piezo pickups found on most competing guitars. The APX900 is especially nice because it has two additional pickups, one on the bass side, one on the treble, each with a level control on the preamp. So you can customize the bass and treble response to your liking. The onboard tuner is accurate and the electronics package is well thought out. The preamp controls adjust through a very wide range of cut and boost.
The materials and finish of the guitar are beautiful--nice woods, deep gloss finish. The plastic soundhole ring is perhaps a little cheesy, but it prevents damage to the edge of the soundhole from enthusiastic picking. The neck is nicely shaped and the cutaway gives access to the higher frets. The gold hardware is pretty, but superfluous.
Why this guitar needs work
I've sampled enough of these guitars to believe that they all come through with essentially the same setup. The strings are too high at the nut and at the bridge and it's impossible to play anything intricate or fast. Most every guitar in this price range has the same flaw because manufacturers won't take the time to do a proper setup and they can't be sure that a low, comfortable action might not wind up too low once the guitar has been shipped, stored, and finally sold. You generally don't find good setup until the price goes over $1000.
I'm fortunate to have the special files to create deeper string grooves for the nut and the tools to lower the height of the bridge saddle. A proper setup on this guitar makes a world of difference in playability, but it needs more: The frets have a matte finish instead of a mirror finish, and they're somewhat flat-topped. Again, this is common in the price range. A guitar repairman can put the proper rounding on the frets and bring them to a high polish, for another major stride in playability.
The final step is to simply throw away the provided strings and replace them with high-quality strings such as Martin MarquisMartin Acoustic String Combo 3 Pack; M2100 Light Marquis Phosphor Bronze, MSP4100 Light Phosphor Bronze and MSP3100 Light 80/20 Bronze or Elixir Elixir Light Nanoweb Acoustic Guitar Strings. The provided strings are touted as anti-rust, but they are draggy, with much friction under your fingers.
With a good setup and strings, the APX900 competes with guitars that cost $400 to $600 more.

What a guitar! The newest member of the APX family, the APX900 features top-quality flamed maple back and sides and a solid spruce top. It delivers a rich, mature tone, with a punchy projection and a bright, long-ringing sustain. A lush and tonally versatile amplified repertoire comes of a newly designed 3-Band preamp, whose adjustable mid-band frequency covers a broad 80Hz - 10kHz spectrum. This not only allows control over the midrange but enables reshaping part of the low and high bands in addition to the dedicated bass and treble controls.

This guitar is made in Korea. I think it's only fair that the seller made this clear in the specs. I would not have wasted my money ordering from USA a guitar made in Korea.

Ovation Celebrity CC28 Acoustic-electric Guitar, Trans Black Burst Flame Review

Ovation Celebrity CC28 Acoustic-electric Guitar, Trans Black Burst Flame

i picked up this inexpensive acoustic/electric for playing at worship.

Preferred by many stage performers and acoustic guitarists who rely on amplification, ovation's super-shallow composite body feels similar to an electric, yet it retains all the benefits and acoustic properties of our proven roundback design. a flamed maple top and matched lightweight bracing give this celebrity a clear amplified tone with plenty of headroom before feedback on stage. the guitar's center soundhole offers a traditional look, and its slim neck has an electric-style profile, 20 hand-finished nickel-silver frets, and low factory-set action. a cutaway insures easy access to the entire fretboard. with its 3-band equalizer and onboard tuner, the instrument's op-4bt preamp provides players with flexible tone control in any performance setting.
