Kala Curly Mango Tenor Ukulele Review

Kala Curly Mango Tenor Ukulele
Average Reviews:

I bought my Kala Mango Uke about 2 years ago, and i'ts still my favorite of all the instruments that i own.
Every aspect of the uke is asthetically pleasing, from the beautiful color of the wood, to the gold plated gear tuners and pink pearloid tuning knobs.
What is most striking about it, of course is the sound. It has an extremely bright, forward sound which includes beautiful ringing high notes and deep bass notes.
I've only hooked it up to an amp a couple of times, and it works well, but it is such a loud uke, that i perfer to play without.
Great Buy!

Giannini GCSM10 EL Handcrafted Series Cavaquinho (Acoustic-Electric) Review

Giannini GCSM10 EL Handcrafted Series Cavaquinho (Acoustic-Electric)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a forro fan and a guitar player, and I decided to take the plunge and buy the Giannini hand crafted model.
I've read mixed reviews about Giannini cavaquinhos on message boards, but this is one of the finest instruments I have ever played. I absolutely love it. The action and intonation are refined. It resonates beautifully. Solid rosewood sides and back. It FEELS and sounds like a great instrument, and the finishing is beautiful.
I have the less expensive Giannini GCSM 4 CTE cavaquinho. It's a decent little beater, but this is a vastly superior instrument.
The pickup sounds great and the built in tuner is a lovely bonus. Amplified or acoustic, it's fabulous.
I can honestly say is a pleasure to play. I'm enthusiastic to play it.

Oscar Schmidt 21 Chord Autoharp Review

Oscar Schmidt 21 Chord Autoharp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this for my six year-old's birthday because her father and I play guitar and she always wants to be a part of the music practice. She is learning to strum in time and be dedicated to practicing an instrument. We all love playing this. Fabulous quality, take some time to tune. Buy the hard case for it and plenty of picks.

Oscar Schmidt is the world's biggest autoharp manufacturer, and the OS21C is one of their most popular models. With 21 chords, a resonant maple body and rock maple pin block, and the handcrafted quality Oscar Schmidt is known for, it's a solid, affordable autoharp that's built to last.

Oscar Schmidt AutoharpsFrom its early beginnings in the 1900s, the Oscar Schmidt Company has offered an instrument with a voice representing individual freedom for American Folk Music. With a wide variety of models to choose from, Oscar Schmidt is truly the original and only complete source for the Autoharp.
The OS21CThe OS21C 21-chord classic is one of Oscar Schmidt's most popular models, and with good reason. As a chromatic 21-chord model, it offers three rows of buttons, meaning quick, smooth chord transitions. Oscar Schmidt's patented chord bar button layout includes A, D, G, C, F, Bb, Eb and A Major; E, A, D, G and C Minor; along with B, E, A, D, G, C, F, and Bb Seventh Chords.
This autoharp features select maple construction, and is finished in an attractive sunburst gloss. A rock maple pin block provides serious strength, to assure your autoharp is always in tune.
Oscar Schmidt backs this instrument with a five-year warranty, for added peace of mind.
About Oscar Schmidt Musical InstrumentsThe Oscar Schmidt Company was founded in 1871 and incorporated in 1911. By the early 1900s, the company had five factories in Europe and a factory on Ferry Street in Jersey City. They made all kinds of stringed instruments, guitars, banjos, mandolins, ukuleles, zithers, and Autoharps.
The company prospered through the early 1920s. Oscar Schmidt instruments were sold in many rural parts of the country where no music stores existed. Salesmen distributed the products far and wide, making them available in general, small town furniture and dry goods stores. Country guitar pickers and blues musicians living in areas of the South and in Appalachia, far from the city, frequently played Oscar Schmidt instruments because they were both inexpensive and available locally. But equally important, they were often chosen solely on merits of their superior tone and volume.
Today at Oscar Schmidt, premium woods, quality hardware and modest prices create an ideal instrument. Each is inspected and adjusted in the USA by a skilled technician, your assurance for smooth fret ends, precision low action and resonant sound quality. Unequalled standards in easy playing comfort and tone response creates the perfect value... Oscar Schmidt.

I bought this uke about a year ago and registered it on line at their site that I find out it is not really theirs but contracted out. well ok but i have a crack developeing in the bridge, well we need the reciept-- but its registered with you--- well not really. But i will send you a return auth that you get to pay for--- send you a repair estimate that you can pay and then return it to you at your expence ----no thanks id sooner put in in the garbage and get a reliable instrument. only noticed the crack because it developed a buzz on the 1st string second fret. the uke has never been out of my room and they wanted to know if I kept it in a safe dry place besides ,I keep in the case schmidt provided , do you use desicant ,are you kidding me!
Well the Uke is at the factory and they are covering the repairs and doing a fulll set up on it. They were great once we got everything in line. I hope it comes out well as I was really in love with this uke it is beautiful and played like butter so I'll put this back up to a five if the repair goes as promised!

Oscar Schmidt OS45CE Acoustic Electric Auto Harp Review

Oscar Schmidt OS45CE Acoustic Electric Auto Harp
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This wonderful, natural spruce top, maple sides and bottom-stained in a reddish sunburst pattern-is a joy to play. It can be played fully acoustically or can be plugged in and with the battery connected-usually included and it "lives" inside a small panel on the back of the instrument (takes 1 9 volt) goes electronic/acoustic. What I mean is that when the battery is connected the instrument then gives you a 4 panel graphic equalizer that allows for adjustment of low range, mid range, top end and overall sound as well as volume output to the not included amp. This has no bearing on the acoustic output of the instrument, only when it is plugged in to an amp. The instrument has great, wonderful, WARM tones in low to mid range and clear sparkling highs that are a joy to hear on the Christmas classics. For a mass production item this autoharp rates well with custom made a-harps. This a-harp is a nice, well rounded instrument for anybody looking to step up from an entry level black 12 or 15 chord OS 73 that are lightweight with no true tones.
Pluses for this harp-4 band equalizer with volume control (when used with a battery and the instrument is to be plugged into an outside amp source). EACH string has a fine tuner installed which makes tuning the instrument to perfection a snap!
Downsides for this harp-the stock setup for the chord buttons is clumsy and not very practical. This is easily rectofied by the owner taking some time to research which chords need to be moved (based on their style/level of play) and then actually moving the chordbars. Plenty of info can be had from various internet sources on better chord bar placement for this and all Oscar Schmidt (Washburn) autoharps. Other than that I am hard placed to name any other downs to this wonderful sounding, great playing intermediate/pro level harp.
This harp will last the average player a lifetime with proper care. The instrument is a great value for what you get.

Rover RB-35 Resonator 5 String Banjo Review

Rover RB-35 Resonator 5 String Banjo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been playing this banjo everyday for close to four weeks. It's bright, clear, loud and stays in tune fairly well, however the tuners slip a bit. Additionally, I've replaced the strings with GHS PF140 light strings. The new strings did make a difference, as the sound improved. All things considered, this banjo is an excellent value.

Rover Banjos look back to the late 1920's and early 1930's to some of the best known banjos of the era as the inspiration for the RB-35 Resonator 5-string instruments. In addition, to the use of professional features and standard dimensions, the hallmark of any Rover banjo design, Saga chose to use aluminum as the rim material because of its characteristic tone, power and projection. Characteristics that cannot be found in similar style wood rim instruments.

Fender FB-54 Banjo, Natural Review

Fender FB-54 Banjo, Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love the Fender FB-54 Banjo, from the stand point of look, feel & the sound is great. The one draw back for me personally is the width of the neck at the top. It is a little narrow for my fat fingers. I'm having trouble fretting the second string & getting free vibration of the first & third. If anyone knows of a banjo that has a wider finger board I'd love to know about it. I think I'd keep the Fender any way, but I might consider a second banjo to learn on.

There's been a huge resurgence in bluegrass over the past several years, perhaps simply because people are realizing that there's a uniquely American sound to the genre. Whatever the reason, banjos are experiencing a huge surge in popularity. The FB-54 is Fender's entry-level banjo, but it has features you'd expect in a much more expensive model-especially the mahogany resonator and neck, 27.4" scale, aluminum rim, rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlay and chrome-covered tuners.

Dean Backwoods Banjo, Six String Review

Dean Backwoods Banjo, Six String
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been a guitar player for over 30 years, and never played the banjo. I bought this as an experiment, as I may need it for a few upcoming shows. I wanted to get a true banjo sound, but didn't want to bother learning a whole new instrument.
This "Gitjo," for the money, is a great instrument. I had to modify the bridge slightly, having to make a slightly deeper cut for the 6th string with a utility knife (it would pull off its 6th position, and move towards the 5th) and I had to place the bridge into the right position (which was a snap, since you can check positioning against harmonics).
The neck is very clean. It plays very well, and is perfectly straight. It is machined beautifully, and the fret positions are perfect. The mother of pearl Dean "Wing" design on the 12th fret is very cool.
The mahogany body is seated with 4 inset screws that were a little loose. I took those out (by hand, piece of cake) and hot glued the insets so they would sit firm. That took a few minutes, but once again was a snap to do. Since the body was off, I took the opportunity to tighten the drumhead a bit with the tool they provided. The instrument is now absolutely solid. BTW, the body is beautifully lacquer-finished mahogany.
Finally, as a result of the experiment (for those that are curious...) the top 4 strings are absolutely indistinguishable from a banjo. The 5th string sounds like a banjo when you play it on the 7th fret or higher, the 6th string isn't all that "banjo-ey." If your going to strum this a lot, i wouldnt change much, but would focus on playing higher inversions of chords, and focus on the top 4 or 5 strings.
If you are going to pick it, I would recommend the following: Replace the 5th string "A" with a guitar "B" string and crank it up an octave to the "A" a full step above the G string, and possibly will do the same with the sixth string (using a D string) to the E above the D.
I would also recommend using very bright, nickle wound strings (probably medium gauge like those starting with a .10 E string). You might also want to buy a set of banjo strings for the top 4, and take a cheap set of acoustic guitar strings and use thinner strings for the 5th and 6th strings.
All in all, the Dean is a great buy if you dont mind doing the last minute tweaks. I think this Gitjo is a great instrument to add to my collection and sounds great!

Dean Performer Acoustic Electric Guitar Quilt Ash Gloss Natural Review

Dean Performer Acoustic Electric Guitar Quilt Ash Gloss Natural
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This guitar is beyond good looking. I opened it, and I swear my pants got shorter, this thing has looks to spare. I can see me pulling more tail than a slow kid at a petting zoo with this beauty in my hands. The sound is underwhelming however. Open chords are weak, especially on the treble. This is probably because the top is a laminate, but I also suspect the nut has something to do with it. Dean makes some fantastic looking specimens, but looks are only half the of what makes a guitar.
Edit: After careful inspection, I found that the nut was the culprit. I took it to the shop and got the grooves re-cut and now this beast has the looks and the sound to kill. I never thought I'd find perfection in an acoustic guitar under $1000, but I believe I have. Also, I just found out it has a built in tuner. I am not going to tell you where, but just look for a switch that says tuner, and then close your jaw. I love this guitar.
