Kala Solid Acacia Concert Ukulele Review

Kala Solid Acacia Concert Ukulele

This instrument is one of of Kala's top of the line concert ukuleles. I've had a few other Kala's and they're all pretty good. The intonation is no better than their lesser models, which is fair. It's real pretty though. I bought it used, knowing it was a very new model, so it couldn't be an old instrument. A couple of weeks later, the book-end glue joint on the top opened up about 1/16th of an inch. Doesn't effect the sound or playing, but looks very bad. Can't return it, don't want to pay to fix it. Next time, I'd stick with a cheaper Kala Model.

Oscar Schmidt OU280SWK Concert Ukulele Review

Oscar Schmidt OU280SWK Concert Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sound exceeded my expectations. I give it 5 stars. It has a full, rich, round tone. It's not as loud as my concert Koaloha, but the tone is probably a little better, though it's somewhat hard to compare, because of the difference in volume. I play it when I want a gentler sound, especially at night. Or just when I want to hear its nice sweet, bell-like tone. I seem to be playing it more often than my tenor Kamaka, and my Koaloha now. It came with Aquila Nylgut strings, which I prefer on my ukes. It's also very solidly built. The body tapers towards the neck, and I like the feel of it. The strings at the nut were a little high, so I filed down the grooves slightly. The nut and saddle are Tusq material.
The appearance fell short of my expectations. I give it four stars. It doesn't look quite as nice as what was on the Oscar Schmidt website, or what I've seen on some Youtube video lessons. It has gold tone Grover tuners, which are very smooth turning, but the knobs themselves aren't gold tone as on the Oscar Schmidt website, they are a matte black sort of hard rubberized plastic. The inlaid abalone scroll work on the neck has a lot of dark brown in it that does not shine. It gives the whole ukulele a sort of antiquish look. Also the fretboard is not solid black ebony, it's striated brown and black. The bridge however is solid black ebony. There are two small glue stains where the bridge joins the soundboard, but I was able to polish them and they're hardly noticeable now. There was some sort of white, chalky substance where the fretboard binding meets the soundboard, but I was able to scape it away with a toothpick and it looks clean there now. The logo on the headplate is not inlaid. It sits on the surface of the wood and is covered over with varnish. Also there is not really enough contrast with the headstock, so it's very hard to read or recognize from even a few feet away. (I would recommend to O.S. a more contrasting logo, so their brand could stand out more.) My uke came with a gray scrape mark about half an inch long on the white binding on the right front. Elsewhere, however, front, back and sides, the koa wood looks very nice, and the finish is immaculate. The abalone inlay of the bindings on the body is also very nice. The interior also looks very clean with no messy joints.
The ukulele case is the best I've seen, with a nice, large overstuffed handle and the Oscar Schmidt logo on it.
For the purchase price to value, I give it 5 stars.
It's really the sound that makes this ukulele outstanding. If it had the gold tone tuning knobs, and a solid black ebony fretboard, as in the photo on the O.S. website, I would have given it an overall five star rating.

Kala Curly Mango Tenor Ukulele Review

Kala Curly Mango Tenor Ukulele
Average Reviews:

I bought my Kala Mango Uke about 2 years ago, and i'ts still my favorite of all the instruments that i own.
Every aspect of the uke is asthetically pleasing, from the beautiful color of the wood, to the gold plated gear tuners and pink pearloid tuning knobs.
What is most striking about it, of course is the sound. It has an extremely bright, forward sound which includes beautiful ringing high notes and deep bass notes.
I've only hooked it up to an amp a couple of times, and it works well, but it is such a loud uke, that i perfer to play without.
Great Buy!

Kala Solid Acacia Soprano Ukulele Review

Kala Solid Acacia Soprano Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was with great anticipation that I awaited this little soprano's arrival as I needed a gift for my wife for our 38th wedding anniversary.
With all of the great reviews on Kala Ukuleles, I had to try their soprano.
As far as the looks go, although not the Koa looking one in the picture, the one that arrived was still nice.
This is a simply made instrument and that's to be expected as it is not on the same build or cost level as a Kamaka, Ko'olau or Pono.
But that in no way takes anything away from this ukulele!
The fingerboard is nicely done especially the nickel silver fretwork. There are no fret ends sticking up and they are nicely rounded at their ends.
After tightening the screws on the end of the friction tuners the soprano stayed in tune perfectly. Do not over tighten these screws! Tighten only in small increments.
The intonation was great. The neck is very comfortable with no surprises. Bar chords are easily played with a nice rolled edge on the fingerboard.
The real gem, in this instrument, is the sound quality! It has excellent projection with the traditional "Bark" when bouncing around on the strings playing chords.
Fingerpicking produces very clear and melodic notes! Fretting is also effortless.
This little instrument was singing to me when I was taking the wrapper off, so I knew it was going to sound great!
I love playing it and my wife loves her gift!

Beautiful and has the real Hawaiian sound. I have played guitar for fourteen years, and I lived on Oahu and Maui for six year and the sound is dead on. Arived in Mint condition tuning is good holds tune very well. Koa is really beautiful wood. I would buy it again !

When the British ship The Ravenscrag first landed in Hawaii they brought with them an instrument never before seen on the islands. The machête was an all mahogany instrument that captured the attention of the locals who wanted one of their own. With no native mahogany on the islands the Portuguese ship carpenters began building what is now known as the ukulele out of koa. Lanikai continues in that tradition by creating the Natural Koa Series. Featuring a Solid Figured Koa top and Figured Koa back/sides the NK series has the exceptionally crisp tone that koa is prized for. The abalone inlays on the body and sound hole coupled with flame maple binding make this ukulele a work of art. Lanikai breaks tradition is by installing Grover tuners geared 18/1 for exceptional tuning control. This is a welcome change for anyone who has dealt with the frustration of using the standard friction tuners. With the easy playability, and included instruction booklet written by Mary Lou Dempler you will be playing in a matter of minutes. If you have never played ukulele before get ready for a world of fun. The ukulele is an addicting instrument that can and will be taken everywhere. The standard tuning on a Soprano, Concert, and Tenor ukulele is GCEA, and on a Baritone DGBE. If you can play one ukulele you can play them all! Giannini GCSM10 EL Handcrafted Series Cavaquinho (Acoustic-Electric) Review

Giannini GCSM10 EL Handcrafted Series Cavaquinho (Acoustic-Electric)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a forro fan and a guitar player, and I decided to take the plunge and buy the Giannini hand crafted model.
I've read mixed reviews about Giannini cavaquinhos on message boards, but this is one of the finest instruments I have ever played. I absolutely love it. The action and intonation are refined. It resonates beautifully. Solid rosewood sides and back. It FEELS and sounds like a great instrument, and the finishing is beautiful.
I have the less expensive Giannini GCSM 4 CTE cavaquinho. It's a decent little beater, but this is a vastly superior instrument.
The pickup sounds great and the built in tuner is a lovely bonus. Amplified or acoustic, it's fabulous.
I can honestly say is a pleasure to play. I'm enthusiastic to play it.

Lanikai NK-T Custom Series Koa Tenor Ukulele Review

Lanikai NK-T Custom Series Koa Tenor Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have played many ukuleles and to me this by far sounds the best. The natural Koa seems to resonate more than the standard Koa or curly Koa ukuleles. I did switch out my strings as soon as I got it for some black strings with the low string being a metal wound string but that's a personal preference. The workmanship is beautiful. I was skeptical originally because I am the type to try before I buy. I had the S-TEQ before this and didn't like the "bright" sound compared to the softer Koa sound. I will try to post a video review so you can hear it.

The new Spalted Mango Series ukuleles illustrate Lanikai's spirit of experimentation by bringing exiting new developments to the ukulele world. SM ukuleles offer exquisite beauty and a very mellow tone, thanks to their solid spalted mango construction. Spalted mango has a unique tonal characteristic that has the midrange of mahogany but the roundness of spruce. The difficulties in crafting an instrument with spalted woods are greatly outweighed by the resulting tone and striking appearance. The flame mahogany neck adds to the stability and comfort of this exquisite instrument. Also included on this model is a passive under saddle pickup that truly captures the unique tone of this instrument. Rounded off with the gold vintage style tuners this ukulele is a classic in the making. If you have never played ukulele before get ready for a world of fun. Luna 23 Inch Dolphin Concert Ukulele Review

Luna 23 Inch Dolphin Concert Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an intermediate musician in general, but new to the world of ukuleles, so take this review for what it's worth. :) I am considering buying a ukulele in about this price range, to which end I spent a couple of hours playing this model of Luna in a local music store. I got pretty attached to it, my hand liked it, and it made me want more. In quality and overall value I would definitely compare it with other ukuleles in the same price range. The online price is usually about $50 less than at a brick-and-mortar store, where it can go for up to $299. The amazing design and also the electronics are a big plus. The tone and intonation are fine by me, and I'm very picky about that. I would agree with the previous review that the tone of the comparable Lanikai, the CK-C, is better in the sense of being more "idiomatic" to the ukulele, though I personally found the tone of this to be perfectly satisfactory. In all, I would recommend that there is no substitute for going to different stores and trying various brands and models out for yourself as opposed to buying any instrument purely based on someone else's impression. IMHO if you fall in love with this one, you will not be disappointed. Just my 2 cents. Happy ukeing!

This Cordoba looks good and plays great, too. I bought it for the extended frets up the neck so I can play more advanced pieces that require the higher notes. I would recommend it to any uke player who likes the smaller size uke (just a tad bigger than the smallest: the soprano) that allows you to play above the 12th fret.

As my first ukulele and as a fairly inexperienced musician I unfortunately cannot give specs such as "action was right on" or anything of that technical nature. I can say the instrument is absolutely beautiful. All of my musician friends are thoroughly impressed and much joy has been shared passing her around the room. She sounds great amped and even I have convinced her to make some music. Not only that but it feels good to support a company like Luna. I am very, very happy with my choice and am planning on buying one of the smaller luna ukes to keep at work for practice.

I loooove this ukulele. The sound is beautiful, and it's wonderfully made. Not to mention the lovely design. Previously I was playing on an Oscar Schmidt, and I loved that one but when as soon as my Luna was tuned and ready to go... wow the first chord I could just tell the sound was amazing.
The only thing I do NOT like is where the plug for electric capabilities is located. It makes it so that I can't sit and play, so I had to crochet a strap haha. But that's about it, everything else is amazing.
