Applause by Ovation UAE148-4 Ukulele Review

Applause by Ovation UAE148-4 Ukulele

For anyone interested in buying a ukulele and can afford it, the Applause Ukulele is the one to buy. If you've ever heard ukulele's before, you'll agree that most have a sound that's just not quite right. It's as if they are out of tune, even when they're not. I know some will argue that's how they're meant to sound, but it never sat well with me. I played classical guitar and I expected the better ukulele's would be able to emulate that same harmonious in tune timbre. Unfortunately, you can spend a thousand dollars and still not get a great sound (when compared to a classical guitar). Fortunately, I've now been proven wrong, the Applause ukulele sings like a guitar. If that's the sound you're after, you wont be disappointed.
P.S. I've also read a lot of stuff about the volume of this uke and I would say it's only down about 10% on volume, but it sure makes up for it in sound.

Lanikai LSM-C Designer Series Concert Ukulele Review

Lanikai LSM-C Designer Series Concert Ukulele
Average Reviews:

I've been a fan of Lanikai for years and spent quite some time deciding on this solid mahogany concert size, but was sorely disappointed when the item arrived. Overall, the solid mahogany and ebony looked nice, but upon closer inspection I saw the workmanship was nothing short of shoddy: the bone nut was actually crooked, resulting in the E string laying much closer to the fretboard. The ebony bridge was roughly sawn, with jagged edges exposed. The ebony fretboard was not oiled or waxed, which looked unfinished next to the high-gloss ebony headstock laminate. Tuning machines were suprisingly cheap looking (seemed to do their job fine, however), with some of the "gold tone" paint exposing the silver underneath. I was most surprised, however, at Lanikai's decision to string this "designer" instrument with cheap black nylon strings. My little soprano LU-11 with Aquila strings sounds heavenly compared to this one...Dull sound, inability to stay in tune, careless workmanship on this instrument resulted in an immediate return.

When the British ship The Ravenscrag first landed in Hawaii they brought with them an instrument never before seen on the islands. The machête was an all mahogany instrument that captured the attention of the locals who wanted one of their own. With no native mahogany on the islands the Portuguese ship carpenters began building what is now known as the ukulele out of koa. The LSM series is a nod to those early builders who would have built their instruments out of the wood they were most familiar with. With great attention to detail Lanikai crafted the all solid mahogany LSM series. Combined with an ebony finger board and bridge this ukulele has a very crisp tone and large projection. With the easy playability, and included instruction booklet written by Mary Lou Dempler you will be playing in a matter of minutes. If you have never played ukulele before get ready for a world of fun. The ukulele is an addicting instrument that can and will be taken everywhere. The standard tuning on a Soprano, Concert, and Tenor ukulele is GBEA, and on a Baritone DGBE. If you can play one ukulele you can play them all! Kala Solid Acacia Concert Ukulele Review

Kala Solid Acacia Concert Ukulele

This instrument is one of of Kala's top of the line concert ukuleles. I've had a few other Kala's and they're all pretty good. The intonation is no better than their lesser models, which is fair. It's real pretty though. I bought it used, knowing it was a very new model, so it couldn't be an old instrument. A couple of weeks later, the book-end glue joint on the top opened up about 1/16th of an inch. Doesn't effect the sound or playing, but looks very bad. Can't return it, don't want to pay to fix it. Next time, I'd stick with a cheaper Kala Model.

Oscar Schmidt OU280SWK Concert Ukulele Review

Oscar Schmidt OU280SWK Concert Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The sound exceeded my expectations. I give it 5 stars. It has a full, rich, round tone. It's not as loud as my concert Koaloha, but the tone is probably a little better, though it's somewhat hard to compare, because of the difference in volume. I play it when I want a gentler sound, especially at night. Or just when I want to hear its nice sweet, bell-like tone. I seem to be playing it more often than my tenor Kamaka, and my Koaloha now. It came with Aquila Nylgut strings, which I prefer on my ukes. It's also very solidly built. The body tapers towards the neck, and I like the feel of it. The strings at the nut were a little high, so I filed down the grooves slightly. The nut and saddle are Tusq material.
The appearance fell short of my expectations. I give it four stars. It doesn't look quite as nice as what was on the Oscar Schmidt website, or what I've seen on some Youtube video lessons. It has gold tone Grover tuners, which are very smooth turning, but the knobs themselves aren't gold tone as on the Oscar Schmidt website, they are a matte black sort of hard rubberized plastic. The inlaid abalone scroll work on the neck has a lot of dark brown in it that does not shine. It gives the whole ukulele a sort of antiquish look. Also the fretboard is not solid black ebony, it's striated brown and black. The bridge however is solid black ebony. There are two small glue stains where the bridge joins the soundboard, but I was able to polish them and they're hardly noticeable now. There was some sort of white, chalky substance where the fretboard binding meets the soundboard, but I was able to scape it away with a toothpick and it looks clean there now. The logo on the headplate is not inlaid. It sits on the surface of the wood and is covered over with varnish. Also there is not really enough contrast with the headstock, so it's very hard to read or recognize from even a few feet away. (I would recommend to O.S. a more contrasting logo, so their brand could stand out more.) My uke came with a gray scrape mark about half an inch long on the white binding on the right front. Elsewhere, however, front, back and sides, the koa wood looks very nice, and the finish is immaculate. The abalone inlay of the bindings on the body is also very nice. The interior also looks very clean with no messy joints.
The ukulele case is the best I've seen, with a nice, large overstuffed handle and the Oscar Schmidt logo on it.
For the purchase price to value, I give it 5 stars.
It's really the sound that makes this ukulele outstanding. If it had the gold tone tuning knobs, and a solid black ebony fretboard, as in the photo on the O.S. website, I would have given it an overall five star rating.

Lanikai CK-TEQ Tenor Curly Koa Acoustic Electric Ukulele Review

It's not often you find a KOA ukulele at such a great price. This ukulele has a beautiful tone and sounds fantastic amped! I own four ukuleles now and this one is by far my favorite. Lanikai, although made in china, makes outstanding ukuleles. When I first got it, it made a buzzing sound when strumming loud. This is an easy fix. There was a wire resting up against the soundboard. I just reached into the sound hole and adjusted the wire so it was no longer resting on the soundboard. As a result, the best ukulele ever! The tuning pegs are phenomenal. The cutaway design really helps when playing the higher frets. To top it all off, this ukulele looks fantastic. If you are considering a tenor ukulele to add to your ukulele family, I highly recommend this one.

Kala Curly Mango Tenor Ukulele Review

I bought my Kala Mango Uke about 2 years ago, and i'ts still my favorite of all the instruments that i own.
Every aspect of the uke is asthetically pleasing, from the beautiful color of the wood, to the gold plated gear tuners and pink pearloid tuning knobs.
What is most striking about it, of course is the sound. It has an extremely bright, forward sound which includes beautiful ringing high notes and deep bass notes.
I've only hooked it up to an amp a couple of times, and it works well, but it is such a loud uke, that i perfer to play without.
Great Buy!

Kala Solid Acacia Soprano Ukulele Review

Kala Solid Acacia Soprano Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It was with great anticipation that I awaited this little soprano's arrival as I needed a gift for my wife for our 38th wedding anniversary.
With all of the great reviews on Kala Ukuleles, I had to try their soprano.
As far as the looks go, although not the Koa looking one in the picture, the one that arrived was still nice.
This is a simply made instrument and that's to be expected as it is not on the same build or cost level as a Kamaka, Ko'olau or Pono.
But that in no way takes anything away from this ukulele!
The fingerboard is nicely done especially the nickel silver fretwork. There are no fret ends sticking up and they are nicely rounded at their ends.
After tightening the screws on the end of the friction tuners the soprano stayed in tune perfectly. Do not over tighten these screws! Tighten only in small increments.
The intonation was great. The neck is very comfortable with no surprises. Bar chords are easily played with a nice rolled edge on the fingerboard.
The real gem, in this instrument, is the sound quality! It has excellent projection with the traditional "Bark" when bouncing around on the strings playing chords.
Fingerpicking produces very clear and melodic notes! Fretting is also effortless.
This little instrument was singing to me when I was taking the wrapper off, so I knew it was going to sound great!
I love playing it and my wife loves her gift!

Lanikai S-TEQ Spruce Series Tenor Acoustic Electric Ukulele Review

Lanikai S-TEQ Spruce Series Tenor Acoustic Electric Ukulele
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a review for the Lanikai S-TEQ Spruce Series Tenor Acoustic Electric Ukulele
Basic features:
-Hohner (Made in China).
-18 frets on rosewood fretboard.
-Solid spruce top with mahogany back and sides.
-Active pickup.
-Tenor cutaway.
-Geared tuners.
When I received the package, I was pleasantly surprised how well the unit was packed: A box within a box, and lots of paper cushion/support. Inside the second box, more cardboard and plastic-balloon padding.
It looks are pleasing to the eye. I was a bit hesitant to get a production instrument from China, but fortunately this particular instrument did not disappoint me. The finish is nice and clean, there were no obvious blemishes, and the build seems solid enough. Inside the soundhole, I can see a bit of carelessness (excess glue in one area of the bindings) but not visible and does not affect the sound. The cutaway feature is... okay... not really something I care about (this is my only uke that has a cutaway body), but it is there for those who do care and want/need it.
There was no buzzing at all, and the frets were nice and polished. It came with Aquilla Nylgut (hi-G) strings, so I didn't have to change them out. The action is lower than I anticipated, so I didn't have to adjust anything. I checked the intonation, and the 2nd-4th strings were pretty much spot on, but the 1st string was a good 20 cents flat on the 12th fret. Because the other strings were in tune on the 12th fret, I speculated that it might have been an issue of the string itself. I changed out the first string, and lo-and-behold... tuned right on A.
The sound is very punchy and bright, due mainly to the strings and the solid spruce top. I tried both the standard (hi-G) and the low-G tuning, and for this instrument I like the hi-G tuning better. I use this as my beater/travel ukulele.
The electronics are decent, but for the price ($149) it is very good. My only gripe is the 9v battery, and tells me that this is an older unit (pre-2008) with the Belcat UK2000 preamp, because all the new Hohner ukes made 2008 and after comes with the Shadow JW2 preamp (and Nanoflex pickup) which uses the smaller 3v coin battery. Not too big of an issue, but it is still a difference.
Overall, for the price this is a decent acoustic/electric ukulele. I prefer my solid koas, but when I go out to a picnic or anywhere I do not feel comfortable bringing my solid wood ukes, I bring this baby along. Highly recommended.

I'm a forro fan and a guitar player, and I decided to take the plunge and buy the Giannini hand crafted model.
I've read mixed reviews about Giannini cavaquinhos on message boards, but this is one of the finest instruments I have ever played. I absolutely love it. The action and intonation are refined. It resonates beautifully. Solid rosewood sides and back. It FEELS and sounds like a great instrument, and the finishing is beautiful.
I have the less expensive Giannini GCSM 4 CTE cavaquinho. It's a decent little beater, but this is a vastly superior instrument.
The pickup sounds great and the built in tuner is a lovely bonus. Amplified or acoustic, it's fabulous.
I can honestly say is a pleasure to play. I'm enthusiastic to play it.

Lanikai SM-T Custom Series Spalted Mango Tenor Ukulele Review

Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this ukulele! The spalted mango wood is quite striking, as is the the abalone inlay around the soundhole and top edge binding. The tone is wonderful. The action just right. The tuning pegs work very well. One word of warning, and this applies to all wood instruments like guitars, violins, etc: I would advise buying a case and storing the ukulele in it when not being played. Wood, especially the thin woods used in an instrument of this type, are very susceptible to low-humidity conditions. If you live in a dry climate, or experience cold, dry winters, you really do need to keep the instrument humidified, and that is best done with an in-case humidifier. If you don't, you run the risk of cracks in the wood as it dries out. And I learned this the hard way. Guitar or ukulele humidifiers are pretty inexpensive. There are even instructions online for making them.

The new Spalted Mango Series ukuleles illustrate Lanikai's spirit of experimentation by bringing exiting new developments to the ukulele world. SM ukuleles offer exquisite beauty and a very mellow tone, thanks to their solid spalted mango construction. Spalted mango has a unique tonal characteristic that has the midrange of mahogany but the roundness of spruce. The difficulties in crafting an instrument with spalted woods are greatly outweighed by the resulting tone and striking appearance. The flame mahogany neck adds to the stability and comfort of this exquisite instrument. Lanikai NK-T Custom Series Koa Tenor Ukulele

I have played many ukuleles and to me this by far sounds the best. The natural Koa seems to resonate more than the standard Koa or curly Koa ukuleles. I did switch out my strings as soon as I got it for some black strings with the low string being a metal wound string but that's a personal preference. The workmanship is beautiful. I was skeptical originally because I am the type to try before I buy. I had the S-TEQ before this and didn't like the "bright" sound compared to the softer Koa sound. I will try to post a video review so you can hear it.

I bought this uke about a year ago and registered it on line at their site that I find out it is not really theirs but contracted out. well ok but i have a crack developeing in the bridge, well we need the reciept-- but its registered with you--- well not really. But i will send you a return auth that you get to pay for--- send you a repair estimate that you can pay and then return it to you at your expence ----no thanks id sooner put in in the garbage and get a reliable instrument. only noticed the crack because it developed a buzz on the 1st string second fret. the uke has never been out of my room and they wanted to know if I kept it in a safe dry place besides ,I keep in the case schmidt provided , do you use desicant ,are you kidding me!
Well the Uke is at the factory and they are covering the repairs and doing a fulll set up on it. They were great once we got everything in line. I hope it comes out well as I was really in love with this uke it is beautiful and played like butter so I'll put this back up to a five if the repair goes as promised!

Lanikai O-8E Ovangkol Series 8 String Acoustic Electric Ukulele Review

My wife is the uke lady, at my house she owns 4 and mostly plays this one. THis is a great uke for the price. The set of strings that came with the uke needed to be replaces due to dry rot, but that has not been uncommon with other ukes. * strings is really full sounding. Fit and finish are very good.

Sometimes one needs to break traditions to create a masterpiece. West Africa is about as far as one can get from the islands of Hawaii, but no other wood had the characteristics needed to spotlight the nuances of doubled strings. Coupled with a solid spruce top the Ovangkol series by Lanikai has an incredible full tone. When the song calls for a different voice Lanikai delivers a new array of sounds with this 6 string ukulele. This model comes with the standard tuning of GCEA with the C and A strings doubled like a 12 string guitar. The O-8E acoustic/electric ukulele comes with a Shadow preamp for gigging situations.
