Behringer BXL1800 180-Watt 2-Channel Bass Workstation Review

Behringer BXL1800 180-Watt 2-Channel Bass Workstation
Average Reviews:

This is the second BXL1800 I have owned. The first one was perfect. It's small enough to practice with and has balanced XLR out for playing live. Like I said, the first one was perfect. Unfortunately, I sold the first one and ordered another one. The new one was great for a few weeks, then it started sounding distorted, even at very low volume. No amount of adjusting or EQing could fix it, so I decided it must be a bad speaker and ordered a replacement. Upon removing the original speaker, I noticed that it has a 4 Ohm speaker (very odd for a single speaker setup), and that the speaker is only rated for 120 Watts! Why would they put a speaker into a cabinet that cannot handle the amount of power that the amp is supplying?
All I can say is be careful with Behringer. They are low cost, but apparently not always good quality.

Jet City Amplification JCA2112RC Guitar Tube Combo Amplifier Review

Jet City Amplification JCA2112RC Guitar Tube Combo Amplifier

I've owned this amp for about 6 months and I love it. This amp is a straight-forward single channel rock and blues amp but you can get into heavy metal with a pedal. The distortion is creamy sounding- and distinctly different from other tube amps at this price point (Peavey Valveking, Bugera V22, Crate V16, Blues Jr.) Thank you Mr Soldano! Not a particularly versatile amp- but I think this amp was not intended to be a jack-of-all-trades. What it does do it does wonderfully. Twenty tube watts is plenty for small gigs and jamming with a drummer. The build quality is excellent. This is the JCA 20H head combined with the Eminence special design speaker with added reverb. The reverb is tube driven and sounds lush, but not surfy. I've heard that this is essentially a Chinese-built Soldano Astroverb 16. This amp LOVES humbuckers. I would buy it again and again. The price has come down since I bought it and I think it's a ridiculous bargain at this point. I would also buy their new 50 watt 2-channel combo however I just don't need that much power. I'm a fan of Jet City !

Stacked on an additional JCA12S, the speaker volume doubles and the added height brings the controls to arm's length in a small club.

Kustom Double Barrel 30 Watt 2x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier Review

Kustom Double Barrel 30 Watt 2x12 Guitar Combo Amplifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This amp is a good value for the money, but does not compare with a real tube amp. The amp is plenty loud, and has OK tone, better than the Fender Frontman, a comparable high-selling amp. It is a bit mid-heavy, high end is not that crisp and the low end can get a little muddy. But dont let that stop you, with some determination and a lot of adjustment, there is some good tone inside that amp.
We found the sweet spot on it, not too loud. We mic it and run through the PA, it sounds great.
Advantages:
-plenty loud
-tone has good range and can be dialed in
-gain channel has a great tube crunch, from bluesy to thrashy!
-great deal, beginner amp price, sounds nearly pro
Disadvantages:
-no footswitch for channel / effects change
-reverb and chorus are crap (turn them off, get nice pedals instead)
-only one input
-no fx loop

VHT Special 6 Ultra Guitar Amplifier Combo Review

VHT Special 6 Ultra Guitar Amplifier Combo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the S6U (VHT Special 6 Ultra Guitar Amplifier Combo) for about 2 weeks and the only thing I did was change out the tubes from Chinese made ones to Slavic Republic JJ's 6v6 and 12ax7's. By doing that the amp warmed up more and lost some of the highs in a good way, I felt it was a little brittle but that might just be my ears I feel the tube upgrade was worth the $35! The stock speaker is way to tight in the beginning and you will have to break her in good to lose the plop/sputter then she will sound much better. I picked up a used Celestion G12T75 speaker only because I wanted a better speaker I am still waiting for it so I have no opinion on speaker upgrade as of yet.
I wanted a low wattage full tube amp with a 12" speaker for a long time but either these amps are priced way to high or you can not find one with low wattage. Until the VHT Special 6 Ultra. What's great about the amp is the Low/High Power Switch and the Watts knob so you can increase or decrease the power to the amp which also can change your tone meaning say you want some good gain at low volume all you do is turn down the watt knob to the left and pull out the volume knob and boom you got low volume dirt great to jam out and not have anyone bother you being to loud again. You also have a Depth knob with 11 settings and to my ears moving from left to right UK to USA in tone, a 3 way rocker switch the middle position you will use the most but by flipping it left or right you can find different tones with what ever guitar you are using one way cuts highs and the other the mids I feel this is what I hear, a push pull Volume knob when pulled you get a boost to your signal and finally your Ultra knob for your high gain control. What is also a great addition is when using the Ultra setting the volume knob and the ultra knob work together so you can get some rocking tones depending where you put them so say you want full gain at low volume you can do it or just a little dirt at low volume or at high volume you can do that too also by pulling the volume knob BAM you got a boost too. It is a versatile amp.
Out of the box all stock the S6U sounds very good and worth the investment very easy upgrades and you will have a great low wattage practice amp for years to come. I like the clean channel and there is a lot of tweaking you can do to get different sounds. I have mostly used my Jackson DK2 with Seymour Duncan pups and my Les Paul Special with p100s and a short 10 min run with my SG Standard. Imo the Gibson's sound the best I like the Jackson for the high gain.
In the clean channel at low wattage and the low power setting with the volume knob pulled out you can get some great dirty tones and kind of high gain to my ears and with the wattage full up everything cleans up well.
This amp is worth your money and if you are a modder it is a great point to point hand soldered board so you can upgrade very easily.
this is from the maker of the amp.
Special 6 Ultra Combo
With its additional preamp gain stage, amazing variable Watts control, unique Depth control and tube-driven effects loop, the new high-gain Special 6 Ultra rockets the popular Special 6 platform to the next level.
The Special 6 Ultra's added gain stage provides plenty of overdrive for searing leads, bone-crushing crunch, and gristly grind, while its amazingly effective variable Watts control can reduce the volume to whisper-quiet bedroom practice levels -- while maintaining the same overdriven tone, texture and dynamic feel.
The Special 6 Ultra features the same unique Volume and Tone controls as the original Special 6, the same footswitchable Boost, High/Low Power switch, and a similarly mod-friendly eyelet board. In addition, the Special 6 Ultra features a unique multi-position Depth control that fine-tunes the low-frequency depth; this feature allows you to carefully voice the amp's low-end to perfectly suit a wide range of guitars, pickups, speakers, and musical styles.
The Special 6 Ultra ships with a 6V6 output tube for sweet clean and rich overdrive tones, and to accommodate tone-seeking experimenters, it can accept a wide range of alternate output tubes as well. The Special 6 Ultra also features an all-tube buffered effects loop.
