Epiphone G-400 Custom SG Collection Electric Guitar, Antique Ivory Review

Epiphone G-400 Custom SG Collection Electric Guitar, Antique Ivory
Average Reviews:

Another guitar added to my stable? Yes, but it has rapidly become one of my favourites - the tone variation, the lighter weight and good balance, its classic looks and the triple pickup power and range give it flexibility, the tonal shades and comfort that is uniquely its own.

Elegant and powerful, the classic three pickup SG lives on in stunning detail--even down to the "Les Paul" script at the end of the fingerboard. The G-400 Custom features three powerful Alnico Classic Humbucking pickups like the original but with even more flexibility with individual bridge, middle and neck volume controls to allow for infinite blending combinations.

The classic three-pickup SG lives on.

Angled Headstock Unlike cheaper designs, all Epiphones feature a 14-degree headstock that gives you more pressure at the nut and so you get more sustain with less tuning hang-ups caused by "string-tree" gadgets.
Double-Waxed Pickups Epiphone utilizes a double vacuum waxing process that ensures optimum performance. The pickup is first placed in the specialized wax vacuuming system before the cover is put in place to ensure that the wax fully penetrates to the very center of the pickup and solidifies all parts. After the cover is placed on, it is again given a second vacuum wax bath until the unit is completely saturated with wax.
Output Jack To increase reliability and ensure consistent performance, Epiphone's proprietary output jacks feature an improved contact shape and heavy-duty spring steel.
Toggle Switches All Epiphones feature our all-metal, USA designed switches for reliable contact and longer life.
Tunomatic Bridge Fully adjustable, the tunomatic remains a classic after over 50 years. Unlike guitars fitted with tremolos, there are no tuning or re-stringing difficulties. Plus, tone and sustain are improved because all string vibrations are transferred directly to the guitar.
Potentiometers Epiphone is passionate about performance. That's why their instruments use one-inch diameter potentiometers for better "throw," longer life and reliable service.
Quick-Connectors For unequalled reliability as well as ease of service, Epiphone wiring harnesses feature quick-connectors.

Epiphone Vintage G-400 Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry Review

Epiphone Vintage G-400 Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this guitar from Musician's Friend on Amazon. Due to some trouble, I had to wait for it for a couple of months. It finally is in my hands and I must say I'm impressed and absolutely satisfied. There's plenty of good reviews of this guitar on the web, so I refer you to those for the features; instead, I want to focus on the quality of the product itself. There is some concern among guitarists about buying instruments online, with random reports about people receiving badly constructed specimens of supposedly quality guitars. It hasn't been my case. This guitar has been known, since it was first released, for being a big improvement in quality for Epiphone, and for being the closest reproduction of a 1961 Gibson SG, for less than a third of the price. The one I received from MF and Amazon completely lives up to such fame: completely solid, flawless construction; gorgeous looks and quality appointments; and above all, near professional performance. Like any guitar that comes new out of the box, it required some action and intonation setup, but that was all: no flaws at all in the general construction or in the finish.
A few comments on the features.
The playability is amazing. The neck has the same satin finish as the body; it's wide and flat but not annoyingly fat or thick; and it joins the body at the 20th fret, giving free access to the last frets. All this makes for a lightning fast playing guitar.
The sound is just great. The pickups are hot, they can really give you that Gibson humbucker crunch, and with high distortion it's just brutal, perfect for everything from riffs to soloing to the mighty pinch harmonic! Of course, there are things that no SG can do, but if you wanted to do those things you would be looking at Strat reviews... but it IS a versatile guitar, it can suit many playing styles, and, unlike other guitars popular in the hard rock/heavy metal world, it can handle clean playing very well.
I encourage anyone who is thinking of buying an SG guitar but cannot afford a Gibson to try this one. Other brands might offer the same quality but just lack the "original" vibe that only Epiphone, being a Gibson subsidiary, can offer... and no, I don't work for Epiphone.
EDIT: the first painful quality issue has surfaced. The wood around the input jack is thin. Due to this, any untoward pressure exerted on the area can potentially crack the wood. I turned around with the guitar plugged in, but the cord was stuck under the amp, and so the plug forced the input jack into the wood and it cracked badly. I had heard that before but I never thought it would happen. So be warned... either you take special care in avoiding this kind of situation, or you don't buy this guitar.

The Epiphone Vintage G-400 Electric Guitar plays fast and is a super value. Epi has re-created this SG-shaped legend using a worn satin finish and aged fretboard inlays that give it the look of a cherished original. Gibson Flying V 1968 Electric Guitar, Ebony - Chrome Hardware Review

Gibson Flying V 1968 Electric Guitar, Ebony - Chrome Hardware
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The legendary Flying V by Gibson is one of the top guitars of choice for all music afficionados. I bought my first "V" when I toured with the second re-grouping of Screaming Lord Sutch. I have always loved the remarkeable sustain the V can produces even while being beaten with a bratwurst. I now own three V's and would not part with any of them. There durable construction is a bonus as well. I once clubbed an irrate sound technician in the face with one while doing studio work for "The Filth" back in 93. Once while performing with The Defecators I actually used my 2nd V to bat in incoming beer bottle back into the crowd during a show in Hamburg. The action is very light and perfect for doing solo's with your tongue. My 3rd V can be heard on tracks 2, 4 and 5 on Meat Sticks 3rd album..."Whats for lunch".

I just perchased this guitar for $500, and it was one of the best desicions I have ever made, but if you are prepared to spend 1300 dollars on an Epiphone, I would spend the extra $300 and get a Gibson, but if you find it between 500-900 dollars, buy the Epiphone, it sounds the same as the Gibson, but I wouldn-t spend over $1000 on an Epiphone when the Gibson has a higher resale value and better paint job.

Gibson SG '61 Reissue Electric Guitar Heritage Cherry Review

Gibson SG '61 Reissue Electric Guitar Heritage Cherry
Average Reviews:

What an awesome Guitar! This guitar is good for beginners and advanced players. This looks really nice and is perfect for showing off! The Gibson's strings are very sensitive to touch so it doesn't need a firm grip. The only thing that is bad about this guitar is that it scratches and dents very easy. Other than that this guitar is perfect so start saving up. This is in fact the first guitar the young Jimmy Hendrix ever had (except less old and different color....du'h)!

Click Here to see more reviews about: Gibson SG '61 Reissue Electric Guitar Heritage Cherry

The Gibson SG '61 Reissue Electric Guitar is so light, comfortable, and playable you won't want to put it down. Features a slim-tapered neck, sculpted double-cutaway mahogany body, exclusive Gibson '57 classic humbucking pickups at the neck and bridge, and 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays. Relive some of the greatest moments of rock 'n' roll with a one-piece bound mahogany neck, Tune-O-Matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and chrome hardware. Includes Gibson hardshell case.'60s Slim-Taper Neck ProfileThe '60s neck profilefound on the SG '61 Reissueis the more modern, slim-tapered neck most commonly associated with the Les Paul and SG models of the early 1960s. The neck is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the restincluding the final sandingis done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.'57 Classic PickupsAmong the qualities that make Gibson's original "Patent Applied For" humbucking pickups so unique are the subtle variations between coil windings. For the first few years of their production1955 to 1961Gibson's PAF humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with slightly different output and tone, desirable to players who wanted to mix and match and explore a complete spectrum of tonal possibilities. The '57 Classic and '57 Classic Plus pickups are the result of Gibson's drive to capture and recreate this renowned characteristic. Introduced in 1992, the '57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch. The '57 Classic Plus is the perfect bridge-position companion to the '57 Classic, inspired by those original PAFs that received a few extra turns of wire. Both are made by Gibson to the exact same specs

Gibson Custom ES-335 Dot Electric Guitar, Faded Cherry Satin, Plain Maple Review

Gibson Custom ES-335 Dot Electric Guitar, Faded Cherry Satin, Plain Maple
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wasn't even shopping for one when I got it. I was looking for headphones. Honest. It called to me, though. I can still hear it. "Take me home," it pleaded. I just couldn't say no and thus acquired my first Gibson six string. Learned to play on a lovely SG style Melody Maker a long time ago and had an EB2D bass for a long time but never a six string.
What a beauty! Gorgeous finish, great looking headstock and hefty without being uncomfortable. After playing Fenders and Ovations for years I had to re-do all the patches on my multi-effects stomp box because the 335 is just too powerful compared to those guitars. Those Classic Humbuckers will take your face off if you're not careful! The neck was comfortable right from the get-go and has remained so. The tuners are precise and easy to use and the one neck adjustment I've had to perform couldn't have been easier. I can never find local replacements for the Brite Wires that came with it (nice strings!) but D'Addario EXL110s sound great on it so that's what I use. The guitar's sound is clear and unique with all sorts of tone options available for any song. It's so much fun to play I don't even bother using an amp when noodling around between gigs - another trick that's hard to accomplish on a solid body Fender. The satin finish glosses up over time and looks great. Heck, even the case is gorgeous.
The only gripes I can think of are that it could have used a bit more thorough checking prior to shipping - the B string was binding at the nut when I bought it, necessitating a trip to the local luthier/tech and the saddles don't appear to have been notched for the strings the way I'm told is normal. I also wish they'd use the same size screws for the strap pins as it's a bit of a pain to retro-fit my preferred strap locks on them with the two different holes. (My EB2D had the same oddball screw arrangement.) Rather than fussing with it, I just use "over-the-strap" twist-on Dunlop locks.
This guitar is similar to the ones I grew up seeing and hearing people like Clapton, Johnny Rivers and Justin Hayward play. Never really planned on getting one and now that I have it I'm scared to take it to some of the places I play but that's OK. Everyone needs to treat themselves to a really nice axe every now and then and this one's mine. :-)

History speaks for itself. The ES-335 is one of the most important guitars of all time. Right from its introduction in 1958 as the world's first semi-hollowbody electric guitar it has been a mainstay of players eager to balance the gorgeous, round, mellow tones perfect for jazz and blues with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody.

Countless music legends have immortalized Gibson's ES-335.

Today the Gibson Custom Shop creates exacting duplicates of the ES-335 as it first left the Kalamazoo plant in 1958. That year just 267 were built, but the original vintage 335s grew steadily in popularity, peaking in 1967 thanks largely to Eric Clapton's high-profile use of a cherry ES-335 in the band Cream.
Body and Finishes The Custom Shop ES-335 is available with many finish options, reflecting the color choices that have evolved over the model's 50-year history. In Satin finish, trans black and cherry colors are available, with a plain maple top, back, and rims. Ebony is available only in plain maple. With the figured maple top, back, and rims option, cherry, tri-burst, antique natural, light burst, and vintage sunburst colors are available. Wine red, trans brown, Beale Street Blue, and cinnamon burst finishes are also available in limited quantities, along with gold hardware, for figured and for plain maple models.
Regardless of color, the ES-335 retains its classic proportions: 16 1/2-inches wide, 20-inches long, and 1 3/4-inches deep. The neck is one-piece mahogany beneath a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard with pearloid inlays and a single-ply binding. Additionally, there's single-ply binding on the top and back.
Hardware All hardware is nickel, and there's a classic ABR-1 bridge with a lightweight aluminum stopbar tailpiece. Neck length is 24 3/4 inches with a 1 11/16-inch nut width. Satin finish models have vintage style tulip shaped tuners, while figured and plain tops come with Grover kidney-shaped tuners. All Custom Shop ES-335s have powerful '57 Classic humbucking pickups, two volume pots, two tone pots, and a three-way pickup selector switch. They are strung with Gibson Brite Wire .010 strings and come safely nestled in a black levant case.
Famous Players Spanning numerous decades, the ES-335 has been in the hands of countless musicians. From Chuck Berry's numerous performances to Alvin Lee's incendiary performance at Woodstock to Police's 2008 tour in NYC, the ES-335 has been the instrument of choice for any players seeking gorgeous, round, mellow tones, tempered with the edge and sustain of a full-blooded solidbody electric like the Les Paul.
Nitrocellulose Finish Applying a nitrocellulose finish to any Gibson guitar is one of the most labor-intensive elements of the guitar-making process. A properly applied nitro finish requires extensive man hours, several evenly applied coats, and an exorbitant amount of drying time. But this fact has never swayed Gibson into changing this time-tested method, employed ever since the first Gibson guitar was swathed with lacquer back in 1894. Why? For starters, a nitro finish dries to a much thinner coat than a polyurethane finish, which means there is less interference with the natural vibration of the instrument, allowing for a purer tone. A nitro finish is also a softer finish, which makes it easily repairable. You can touch up a scratch or ding on a nitro finish, but you can't do the same on a poly finish. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous in nature, and actually gets thinner over time. It does not "seal" wood in an airtight shell--as a poly finish does--and allows the wood to breathe and age properly.
All VOS (Vintage Original Spec) series guitars will use a proprietary process that includes unique steps for staining, wet-sanding, and hand-rubbing; subsequently the guitars reflect what a well-cared for 40-year-old guitar looks like. The result is a remarkable patina that will delight even the most discriminating enthusiast.

Epiphone Lefty G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Cherry Review

Epiphone Lefty G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Cherry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've wanted an SG for quite some time. I was going to get a Gibson SG, but figured I'd start with an Epiphone first to see that I liked enough about it to get the Gibson. For the price, this is a well built and designed guitar. As a guitarist of 20+ years, the first thing I do with any guitar is put MY strings on it and set it up to my liking (any review that includes a guitar's set up "right out of the box" is not relevant to a review as each player requires different set ups).
My favorite guitar in my collection is my Epiphone Les Paul standard, so I was comparing every step of the way with the SG to that. Obvious differences aside, the Epiphone SG satisfies me greatly and I'll be using it in all of my music. The body is light and comfy, sharp design. Grover tuners do a good job. The pickups sound really good and, of course, if you're looking for clarity and "umph" comparable to a Gibson you'd want to drop new pickups in the Epiphone. I'm leaving mine in. If the guitar is set up properly it provides a nice balance in tone across the board.
The craftsmanship is very good. Inlays are nice and clean, all screws are straight, neck joint solid, and the finish is beautiful. All moving parts are solid and tight, in great working order. I have no complaints about this guitar.
So, if you're looking for a great guitar at a great price, and want to give a little shout out to Angus Young, Toni Iommi, or Pepper Keenan, go for the Epiphone SG-400. As I pointed out, this is my second Epiphone and I can say that their guitars are very sturdy and dependable.
Enjoy!

Epiphone G-310 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Red
Average Reviews:

I got the epiphone sg over the g-400 (too expensive) as a practice and recording guitar for our band. It plays and sounds far better than any Yamaha Pacifica with the dual humbuckers giving it a meaty sound.
However, it pales in conparison to the real Gibsons due to the dodgy electronics, the bolt on neck, the dodgy color and the hard playing at anything below the 15th fret. I also own a squier p-bass special which, for around the same price, offers far better value for money (even with the dodgy electronics-the bane of cheap guitarists)

Epiphone Tony Iommi G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Ebony Review

Epiphone Tony Iommi G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Ebony
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have played guitar for over 20 years and seldom, if ever have I been so pleased by the performance of a guitar.
The action is great: 24 frets and no dead spots. It plays just as evenly on one end of the fretboard as it does on the other.
The sound is classic: great crunch chord sounds and surprisingly subtle when necessary. Think "Children of The Sea" and "Sign of The Southern Cross" or "Symptom of The Universe". Rich, full, fat bottom sounds and beautiful clarity in the higher regions when soloing.
This guitar also looks cool as well: the cross inlays are nice without being gaudy and also Iommi's signature is noticeable without being overbearing. The guitar is practical, looks good and performs like a dream.
I don't know what weight problem the previous review was referring to but this guitar is great and I smile to myself each time I pick it up to play.

I think Epiphone made one of the best SG's out there. First of all, it has 24 frets, which is not common on most SG's. Second, it has a coil tap function on the volume knob which makes single coil sounds more accessible. Lastly, gold hardware. This SG can compete with Iommi SG, which I was originally wanted to get but found this at a fraction of the cost brand new Musicians Friend. It had a crack on the headstock which made it so cheap but value wise it is worth alot more. Hopefully, I will a good Gibson like this and even if I get one this one will still be my collection of guitars. Thanks Epiphone for making an excellent guitar at an affordable price.

OMG, just got my les paul a week ago and everything said about sustain and fat tone is true. it's like a slice of heaven here on earth. if you wish for a preview listen to anything by Gary Moore. BTW, this guitar came with a hard case vs the advertised gig bag. One last thing, when chooseing i had to decide between function or form, i chose function, hence it does not have that deep brillant shine and the wood is not the AAA maple but oh the sound is sweet!

The arrival of the Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar in 1983 offered guitarists all the essential elements of a Les Paul Standard, including a carved top and humbucking pickups. Its simple yet elegant design quickly helped it become the most popular model in the Les Paul Series. Cutting-yet-rich tonethe hallmark of the Les Paulpours out of the 490R and 498T Alnico II magnet humbucker pickups, which are mounted on a carved maple top with a mahogany back. The faded finish models are equipped with BurstBucker Pro pickups and a mahogany top. The Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar includes a Gibson hardshell case (Faded and satin finish models come with a gig bag) and a limited lifetime warranty.Body and FinishA solid, carved maple top and chambered mahogany body give the Les Paul Studio the same tonewood combination that has been helping Les Paul Standards rock for nearly 60 years. And each of its four available nitrocellulose finishes makes for a stunning looking guitar, even while its no-frills approach eliminates body binding and pickguard. Mahogany is a medium-dense wood with excellent resonance and superior sustain, and it offers a rich, round, warm tone, but with plenty of high-end sheen and good mid-range presence. Add a solid maple top, and the guitar's tone is enhanced with added clarity, sustain and definition. The body's chambering also enhances its mellow acoustic resonance, and adds further air to the midrange content. PickupsGibson's 498T and 490R pickups ("T" for treble, and "R" for rhythm) have the traditional characteristics of the original "Patent Applied For" pickups of the late 1950s, with a few upgrades. These pickups take advantage of wax potting, which does away with any air space inside the pickup, therefore lessening the chances of microphonic feedback. The result is a humbucker with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490R's ideal complement.Tak

Epiphone Firebird Studio Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry Review

Epiphone Firebird Studio Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Firebird isn't the same instrument as the Gibson Firebird - it has a flat slab body and glued-on neck instead of the running-board styled through-neck of the original, and its pickups are full-size humbuckers rather than mini's - but it's a Firebird nonetheless, because the shape, design and bigness have all the right feel to them. The body is thin and resonates and the pickups are a good approximation of classic Gibson humbuckers, giving the guitar the authentic sound of a Gibson, albeit closer to an SG than a Firebird.
The smart-alecky Steinberger tuners, which could cost you a third of the price if you bought them separately, have good and bad points. On the good side, the string is clamped straight into the raising-and-lowering string post, so it can't slip as strings sometimes do when wound round and round in the normal way; the ratio is a larger-than-normal 40:1, which makes fine-tuning easier; you can actually tune down with some confidence as well as up (as long as your nut slots don't pinch the strings); and they look right - they stick out backwards, out of sight like the old banjo tuners on the original Firebirds. But it is not very easy to load them - you need to pull the string hard and if you don't pull hard enough you can run out of adjustment later as the strings stretch - and if you want to pull them tighter you can't because you've already trimmed off the ends so there's nothing to grab; and if you ever want to take strings off and put them on another guitar, you can't because they have to be trimmed very short (and of course their lengths are in the reverse order from those on a Fender).
My overall impression is very good if you want a real Gibson-approved, well-made and cheap humbucker guitar and like the Firebird style. Lose one star for some of the tuners' quirks.
Oh and by the way, it doesn't balance on the strap, but then reverse-body Firebirds never did, so that's authentic too. I'm thinking of moving the strap button on mine, but it's marginal whether it can be moved far enough to make a difference

This is one bad little bird. The Epiphone Worn Firebird Studio combines a "reverse body" design Mahogany body, set Mahogany neck and Rosewood fingerboard with an attractive "Worn" Cherry finish that feels as nice as it looks. It sounds great too, thanks to a pair of full-size high-output Alnico Classic Humbuckers, each with separate volume and tone controls. Hardware includes Chrome Epiphone LocTone locking Tune-o-matic bridge andStopbar tailpiece for even better sustain and super-cool Steinberger 40:1 direct-drive, gearless tuners for extra-accurate tuning power.

Epiphone G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Cherry Review

Epiphone G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Cherry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I haven't had many guitars but the ones that I have had are as follows:1992 Washburn Nuno Elec (or was it 93??)
1989 Fender Strat American (Brother's. Was mine for a while)
2000 Fender Strat Eric Clapton
2000 Epiphone RivieraI've had the opportunity to play many, many other guitars as well but only when one owns a guitar can he or she truely get to know it.
I played the G400 for about 15 minutes at a local shop and thought to myself that it'll do. I brought it home unimpressed and I felt more like "mission accomplished" rather then "hell yes". I bought it because I needed a guitar to play instead of my EC Strat which I cherish and do not want to get beat up. I plugged in the G400 and played it a bit and again felt that it'll do. Over time, I noticed that I could play the G400 far better than any other guitar that I've used. I noticed that I could control it a lot better and create more nuances. I could thrash it and it sounded great. I could delicately play it as a precision instrument and it just does what I want it to do and sounds wonderful while doing so. It just kind of clicked one day. In an instant, I went from thinking that this is just a cheapy guitar into thinking and knowing that this thing is WONDERFUL.
This is not a good cheap guitar. This is not a great cheap guitar. This Epiphone G400 is just plain awesome dare I say even epic. Oh I just dared! It is indeed epic.
I get the same questions from people. "But can It play blues?", "does it do metal well?", "hows the neck dive?"
Hell yes it can. Blues is a state of soul, you can play the blues with damned near anything. It does metal VERY well. The neck dive isn't so much a problem as the heaviness of my strats are. The G400 is lightweight and ALIVE.Is this guitar for everyone? Of course not but I'm fairly certain that any true guitarist would very much appreciate what it is, what it can do, what it sounds like and what it represents.
If you want to give an AMAZING gift. This would be it. Give it to your son and he will light up. Give it to your father and he may shed a tear. Give it to your brother and he'll probably hug you. Give it to your sister and she may hook you up with her "one friend". You know which one I'm talking about. Yeah...yeah you do ;)
I've had mine for 2 years and have had no problems. My other guitars are collecting case-dust :( Also, I have it from a good source that Epiphone instructs the chinese manufacturer that makes this guitar to use the better cuts of wood for the cherry edition. I don't know how true that is but my cherry red version sure does look AWESOME.

A true icon guitar, the SG was originally a successor Les Paul model from '61 to '68. This edition of the prized 1962 SG boasts the power and merciless sustain you expect to shake you all night long. It's constructed of a Mahogany neck glued into a Mahogany body with twin Alnico Classic Humbucking pickups.

The Power and Merciless Sustain You Expect.

Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar, Heritage Cherry Review

Gibson SG Standard Electric Guitar, Heritage Cherry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A lot of guitar players buy guitar after guitar working their way up to the upper line models. Why not save money and buy one from the start. I had a low end Gibson Epiphone for about 10 years. I've been saving my money for a while and then finally I decided to get something nice. My reasoning for picking the SG over the Les Paul, or even a nice Strat or Ibanez, was that some of my favorite bands play with SG's. I dont know if it's the best or not, I'll probably never know because I'll never buy another guitar again(except a rickenbacker 330 oneday:) ).
The guitar itself seems a masterpiece to me. I'm no Guitar Tech but I've been told that since Gibson and many other companies moved away from handcrafted to maching made instruments that the quality just isnt the same. In spite of that the guitar seems flawless to me. I've been told by a Tech that there is a slight bend on my fretboard on the low E side and on the hight E side it is perfectly straight, and that would keep me from attaining perfect toneality and action in the neck and strings. Another Tech told me it didnt matter that much... I dunno. It seems gr8 to me.
Besides that my skills have really increased since buying this Guitar, just the excitment of owning such a fine piece of equipment had cause me to spend more time playing and practicing a lot. Also it is so easy to play, everything from the action to the sound, the fretboard is extremely accessable esp at the bottom of the neck. This guitar is a joy to play. If you want an SG go for the Standard or higher. Dont go for the lower models.

Gibson's best-selling SG Standard shatters all perceptions of what an electric guitar can--and should--be. The slim, lightweight mahogany body; unmistakable twin cutaways, pointed horns and beveled edges; the fastest neck in the business; a pair of Gibson's screamin' humbucker pickups--all irresistible features coveted by some of the greatest guitar players of all-time. Various SG models have been played on-stage by the likes of Pete Townshend, Angus Young, Tony Iommi, Robby Krieger, Chris Robinson, Alex Lifeson, Derek Trucks, Elliot Easton, Jim James, Jeff Tweedy, Moby, Keith Urban, Nick Jonas, Rocco DeLuca. When will you add your name?

A New Classic for Rocking Through the Twenty-First Century
Available FinishesTake your pick between two gorgeous, time-honored finishes--Heritage Cherry or Ebony--both of which are applied by hand in a process that demands several coats and many hours. Unlike a lot of of our competitors, who settle for a polyurethane finish, Gibson opts for a nitrocellulose finish that will encourage the natural vibration of the instrument for a purer tone. In addition, a nitro finish is very porous and actually gets thinner over time. That way your guitar's wood can breathe and age beautifully.
Exquisite Mother-of Pearl and Acrylic Inlays Among other key distinctions, the SG Standard stands out from its no-frills kid sister, the SG Special, because of the fine mother-of-pearl Gibson logo and holly inlays that decorate its headstock. The SG Standard also boasts figured acrylic trapezoid inlays along its rosewood fingerboard.
'50s Rounded Neck Profile No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The more traditional '50s neck profile--found on the SG Standard--is the thicker, rounder, more time-honored profile, emulating the neck shapes of the iconic late '50s Gibson models. The neck is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest--including the final sanding--is done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.
Set-Neck Construction Like all classic Gibson guitars, the necks on Les Pauls and SGs are distinguished by one of the more traditional features that have always set them apart--a glued neck joint. Gluing the neck to the body of the guitar ensures a "wood-to-wood" contact, no air space in the neck cavity, and maximum contact between the neck and body, allowing the neck and body to function as a single unit. The result? Better tone, better sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks.
Gibson's 490R AND 498T Pickups The mid to late 1960s saw the emergence of a very different type of music coming from the clubs of England. This new genre's players were demanding more powerful amplifiers with increased volume outputs to satisfy their sonic explorations. This led to a call for a more versatile pickup, and Gibson answered the call with the 490T and 490R pickups ("T" for treble, and "R" for rhythm), humbuckers with the tonal characteristics of an original PAF, but with a slight increase in upper mid-range response. The Gibson 498T bridge pickup is the 490's ideal complement. Taking the 490 one step further, the 498 swaps the Alnico II magnet to an Alnico V, thus making it slightly hotter with emphasis on mid-ranges and highs. The pole pieces on the 498T are also aligned a little further apart to accommodate the spacing of the strings at the bridge, which is different than the spacing of the strings at the neck.
Solid Mahogany Body Probably the most central of all SG features is its solid mahogany body. The mahogany goes through the same rigorous selection process as all of Gibson's woods, and is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures all woods are dried to a level of "equilibrium," where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods' machinability and finishing properties. Consistent moisture content means that the SG will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar,Worn Brown Satin Review

Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar,Worn Brown Satin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Features:
Tuners are the green keys and I love them. Both LPs and my ES have them. The only disadvantage to the faded finish is that you can plainly see the one piece that runs from the neck down to the strap button instead of being blended into the two side pieces. Frets are large, well finished, but very large.
Quality:
Depends on how picky you are. The action was very high out of the box. The bridge pickup was set just as high. After lowering both the guitar was set. No need for anyone to setup the instrument. Intonation was perfect as was fretting. Finish? It is smoothed and pore filled mahogany. I worry less about this guitar than any of my others. It is robustly made - made for playing. This will last as long if not longer than any of my others including the oldest being the 1969 ES 345.
Value:
I paid $579 shipping included. Value? A Gibson for under $600 and it's not a crappy import? I am loathe to give anything a "10" but this guitar is very close.
Desirability:
Ever since Woodstock when I saw the Dead, the Who and Santana all sporting SGs, I knew I had to have one.
Sound:
How do two humbuckers sound? Like a Gibson. This guitar sounds as good as any other Gibson I have played or heard. I do notice the pickups being any "hotter" because of the lack of covers. I play Fusion - loud jazz. This guitar is more versatile than my ES 345 TD, varitone and all. I play though a Fender amp and a Marshall. They both compliment the humbuckers beautifully.
Ease of Use:
The neck is amazingly fast - I don't think I want another nitrocellulose neck again. And I find myself constantly going past the last fret - access is that easy. Rolloff on the tone controls is fairly linear. Weight distribution is fine - the neck is not too heavy for the body. Learning curve? Sure - playing the guitar is nothing BUT a huge learning curve ;) Very easy to get started on this guitar.
Support:
No opinion yet.
Overall:
I have nothing but high praise for this guitar. I thought I would be disappointed with the "finish." I am not. I heard "stories" about frets not being dressed properly or strap buttons being less than average, or tuners not holding pitch. None of that was true.

Packing the same power and intensity as the SG Standard, but without all the trimmings, the Gibson's SG Special electric guitar retains the heart and soul of the SG--solid mahogany body and '50s rounded neck profile--while adding dot inlays, silk-screened logo, a pair of Gibson's hot 490 humbuckers and a deluxe gig bag.

Epiphone Faded G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry Review

Epiphone Faded G-400 SG Collection Electric Guitar, Worn Cherry
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I started playing guitar about 8 years ago as a hobby. Back then, I bought an acoustic guitar for it's simplicity and warmth and learned the basics. Being self-taught, I am no rock star, I just enjoy the instrument. My ability hit a plateau and I started to get bored/discouraged with the guitar. I decided to buy an electric because I though the ease of expression and playability might encourage me. I have always loved reggae music and was after a specific sound. Also, I didn't want to spend a ton of $ since I am not in a band or anything, like I said, it's just a hobby.
I have always liked the SG style but didn't know much about them. I played a G-400 at a store and was impressed with the tone and feel. I compared it to the $600 Epiphone model and found the stats almost identical. I then compared it to a $1200 gibson SG and honestly, the difference was negligible. I am no expert but I almost preferred the feel of the $300 Epiphone. Also, I really like the worn red finish, it looks great and feels really nice. I also played a fender stratocaster but the G-400 was the one that 'spoke' to me. So, I hesitantly laid down the dough and brought it home. I have had it for a month now and I am so impressed. The fit and finish, the playability, the tone, the versatility, and the feel of this guitar have all exceeded every expectation. I am playing now more than ever and having a great time experimenting with the different settings and sounds, playing along with my favorite reggae music and nailing down some concepts that eluded me on the acoustic for some reason.
In summation: electric guitars are expensive, in general, and while $300 is a lot of money, this is a great guitar for the price. It is easy to play, versatile, elegant and a lot of fun. I am looking forward to years of enjoyment from this instrument.

Now you can have an SG that looks vintage but without the vintage price. This G-400 features a 'Faded' satin finish and 'aged' fretboard and headstock inlays. The well-worn look even carries to the neck finish, for that comfortable broken-in feel to complete the cool antique vibe.
