Based on my purchase price of two hundred and fifty dollars during a great Amazon sale, these are my opinions.
1. You cannot get a better acousto-electric guitar for $250.
2. Tone: At it's full list price in the $600+ range it competes with the lower end Martin and Gibson guitars. It doesn't come close to a low end Martin in tone. Martins are much fuller and richer, even with its low end line. The Alvaraz is a much brighter, less bass type of acoustic. I felt it was on the thin side.
3. Projection: High end guitar guitars have a presence and a certain percussive "push" as the sound comes out of the sound hole. A low end Martin has this. This Alvarez doesn't have that push. The sound seems to be "held" in a little. The body is heavily lacquered and this might have something to do with that.
4. Electronic pick up: This is a highlight of the guitar. This is a very sophisticated electronic pickup for any guitar. It has a built in tuner, 3 band equalizer, adjustable notch filter for feeback control, reversing polarization switch. Buying and professionally installing an electronic pick up could cost as much as this guitar was. This is not low end electronics.
5. Neck and fingerboard: Good overall feel and action. Not the very best I have played on, but still pretty good.
Summary: Again my rating is based on the low price I paid. If you will use this guitar for mostly amplified situations, this would be a very good purchase.
