Most guitarists enjoy the distorted sound of tube amps. Others of us appreciate the natural sound of a good archtop through a clean amp. Our choices are narrowed considerably by this preference. After investigating, I found my way to the Cube80x. It's been a good choice for my Epiphone Broadway. The clean tone of this amp (with clear ties to the Jazz Chorus amp) is quite pleasing and blends well with the natural sound of the instrument. There are plenty of built-in effects and emulations as well. They're fine in a pinch. I also appreciate the wide range of the 12" speaker. When playing solo jazz the low frequencies are solid, but not overdone. The small size of the unit is also a definite plus.
The downside of this amp is hiss. I think that--no matter what mode you select--signal passes through the internal DSP. Whatever they're using is just a couple of bits too stingy and the result is some quantization hiss. This hiss is also present at the direct out jack. It's not too hard to think away, and isn't likely to be noticed in a club situation. Still, this is the one place that Roland didn't do a first-rate job. All in all, it's a nice amp at an attractive price.
