I have been playing guitar mainly metal and heavy metal for more than 25 years. During these years I have been always looking for the last axe machine to put my hands on. Based on this, at this point I have too many guitars including Jacksons, Ibanezs, LTDs, ESPs, Parkers, Fenders, Gibson, Schecters, Epiphone and this one, my first Dean. I bought this guitar about two months ago. It is definitely a great guitar but needs work to get to that status.
Pros: The features on the guitar are absolutely killer. The white metallic paint is very nice. The EMG 707s sound great, it handles very well the 7th string. I am a big fan of the Seymour Duncan's Blackouts. But even if they have different sounds, I think these two are the best pickups in the market if used with high gain distortion. The EMG clean is a little weak, but this guitar was made for metal isn't? I love the neck. It is the highlight of this guitar and there is nothing like it in the market. It feels pretty much like the Ibanez Wizard II-7 texture but a bit thinner; The fretboard is very flat and very nice too. The deep cutaway is very convenient when playing up on the higher notes and big hand stretches. It is definitely a shredder machine and its playability is absolutely amazing. No tuning problems with the licensed Floyd Rose. It comes with hard case, which is not the best quality but it's ok. I bought this guitar directly from Amazon and its (regular) shipping was incredible fast. It took literally two days to be received.
Cons: I found this guitar a little expensive in comparison to a much better finished LTDs and Schecters (all three made in South Korea with similar specifications- EMGs, Floyd Roses, Grovers and wood in some cases). Obviously the Rusty Cooley's signature costs and this makes a difference. It seems like the Dean was shipped directly from S. Korea to a warehouse and then to my home. In my opinion nobody in the US checked it and set it up before was sold. This is not the case with the LTDs and Schecters, which are always checked in the US (at least all the 6 that I have) before they are placed in the stores or sold online. In my opinion this little extra work makes a big difference in quality control. The action in this guitar was too high (knowing the real objective of this machine "shredding") and the intonation needed work. The metallic white paint looks very nice, but it was poorly sprayed. You will see some miniature bumps in some areas, which shows not a good job (At least on mine). Also the painting around the back screws that hold the neck, the chord entry and the back spring sections is very poor done. The battery cavity for a $1,000 guitar is very cheap (not a big deal I guess). But what I think is the real problem (but fixable) with this guitar was the frets, very cheap made, rugged, some of them not evenly placed and very flat (almost like a Fender). In general very bad fret work and quality in comparison to other brands. Also, there is no way that these are Jumbos as published by some sellers. Unfortunately, I am not too handy in repairing this issue, so I took this guitar to an experienced guitar tech to change the frets to Dunlop's 6000 and for a complete tune up. Finally, this guitar plays like a dream.
Conclusion: Other than the small painting issues, this guitar feels great now, but be prepared to put some dollars on top of the already "kind of high" cost if you want it to feel like the ultimate 7 string shredding/metal guitar.
