As always there are a few divisions among guitar players - and I'm not talking about playing styles - I'm talking about as paying customers for gear. If we remove the major live performing artist with record deals we're left with everybody else... That's most likely You and Me, and among us there's a sharp division of guys who buy nice gear consistently and the guys who just don't, won't or can't. For the guys who have a hard time parting with real money (for what amounts to a large practice amp) this is just too much. However, the guys who have a little dough and aren't afraid to spend it on nice stuff the Fender Blues Jr. III is actually a really good deal.
The design of the Preamp and power section of this amplifier is what every solid state amplifier strives to sound like, and presently among the available small amplifiers with these same design characteristics five hundred dollars is actually about as low as you'll find - under any name or moniker... Bogner / Crate BlackHeart / Laney VC15 / VOX AC15C1 I've played through them all at different places and different times (over the past month)trying to get just the right amp... You can't go wrong with any of them
BUT: The winner for me was the Blues Jr. III
Also, there was last years version of the blues Jr. for a little less dough but it didn't feedback as controlled and with the presence as this new little guy did - not sure what changes were made but there is a difference between the two...
The sound:
It's got that TUBE thing that everybody wants - It's warm but punchy with nice chime like tones on bar chords and good shimmer and twang on open stuff - when you drive it hard it feeds back beautifully on both my Les Paul Standard and my Fender American Standard, it also works like nothing else on P90's - it makes P90's sound ridiculous
It's loud enough to keep up with a live drummer but that's probably not it's best option
At about half it's rated output is where this little guy shines, all the right things happen when you get it working but not straining (which is actually pretty darn loud) it's really the perfect size and power for a practice amp that will have your guitar playing buddies wondering how you get that great tone...
